NY governor makes case for Manhattan tolls in meeting with Trump after feds ordered a halt

Source: AP

Updated 4:02 PM EST, February 22, 2025

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul made the case for Manhattan’s congestion tolling during an Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump after federal officials ordered a halt to the program, a spokesperson for the Democratic governor said.

Hochul and Trump met for more than an hour on Friday afternoon and also discussed other issues including immigration, infrastructure, economic development, energy, offshore wind and nuclear power, press secretary Avi Small said. He said Hochul presented Trump with a booklet showing the early success of congestion pricing. Small declined to comment further on the conversation. The White House did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Saturday.

The Trump administration on Wednesday ordered a stop to the program, which launched Jan. 5 with the goals of thinning traffic and funding mass transit by imposing a $9 toll on most vehicles entering Manhattan’s core south of Central Park. Transit officials said the toll has brought modest but measurable traffic reductions.

Despite the federal order, the tolls are remaining in place for now because of a federal lawsuit aiming to keep them alive that was filed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a state agency that runs public transit in New York City. Hochul said the tolls will continue while the lawsuit is pending.

it barely sounds like enough time to get through a few "pleasantries" (e.g., intros, handing out copies of documents) and then doing some kind of "powerpoint presentation" type of summary - concluding with responses to a few questions, perhaps scheduling to send written follow-ups to questions that they didn't have an immediate answer for, and then being summarily dismissed.

No doubt you’ve come across a few in your work! They are impervious to learning. Their “opinions” are more important than your facts and statistics. Their faith in themselves supersedes their obvious failures.

Trump is the epitome of a Dunning-Kruger individual except that his assessment of himself is light years apart from the reality of his life.

Like NY and CA, should go to Trump and tell him that if he refuses to provide federal assistance to their states, they will stop sending money to the federal government, to cover the gap. No playing nice. The legalities do not matter, because Trump ignores the law anyway.

But it's the same logic that Trump uses when he tries to with hold federal funds. It doesn't matter if it's legal or not - Trump has long since gone past "the law", so just do the same back to him.

CA / NY, etc., could demand the red states balance their own budget before CA sends them any more money. That would cripple Trump's illegal with holding of federal funds to Blue States.

But again, CA does not send the federal gov't the money... the residents and businesses of CA do. When you (or your employer) pay your federal income tax, it is not sent to the state to forward to the federal government, it is sent directly to the federal government. The state gov't has no mechanism by which to prevent the funds from going to the feds since the money does not pass through them in the first place. Unless maybe the governor wants to simply issue an edict that businesses and individuals should not pay their federal income taxes. But I don't imagine many would comply, short of some clear legal foundation, considering the personal consequences of not paying your taxes.

It's just the only way to not pay Federal taxes. Then there would be a Civil War and we would lose and be occupied.

Again, we have to rely on the courts. Federal assistance can't rely on political orientation. Freedom of speech and no taxation without representation.

Waiting to see if SCOTUs will find a way around it, and lal the other cases.

This is yet another Republican attempt to defame the United States of America, so the best thing contributor states can do is to directly shore it up in the name of the nation on their own initiative. It would probably end up more effective in the long-run anyway.

Use the federal system to circumvent local corruption, but it works the other way too.

butts into local issues being addressed at the local level. Why would they want to stop the tolling? How can that be anything remotely important to the governance of the nation? It's a puzzler for sure.........
