German elections: CDU's Merz looks set to be next chancellor as far-right AfD surges

Source: CNN

• Friedrich Merz is likely to become the next German chancellor after his conservative CDU party topped the vote in elections, exit polls project. The stuttering economy and immigration were major voter concerns.

• The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) almost doubled its vote share and surged into second place. But it is likely to be frozen out of power as other parties are refusing to work with it.

• SPD, the party of current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, slumped to third place, with just 16% of the vote – its worst showing in decades.

• The election came against a backdrop of the Trump administration transforming historic security ties with Europe and moving ahead with peace talks on Ukraine.

• Whoever wins, coalition talks are a near-certainty. Single parties rarely win majorities in German elections so Merz will have to open talks with other parties on forming a government.

Yes, the conservative CDU/CSU won with 29%, but they're nothing like Trump conservatives, more like moderate Democrats. And the remaining parties on the left, when you add up their respective tallies, got 47.6%. Together, that's 76.6% to AfD's 19.5%.

While Germany has clearly been in an anti immigration mood, he doubled down:

In December 2021, Scholz said that Germany was a country of immigration and pledged to reduce barriers to immigration to Germany and make it easier for immigrants to obtain German citizenship. 352,000 people applied for asylum in Germany in 2023, the highest number since 2016, when 722,370 people applied for asylum. People from Ukraine are not included among asylum seekers. Most asylum seekers in 2023 were from Turkey, Syria and Afghanistan. In September 2023, more than 120 boats carrying approximately 7,000 migrants from Africa arrived on the island of Lampedusa within 24 hours. Some of the migrants were relocated to Germany.

but it is disappointing to see them getting way too many votes. Germans should know better because of their history.

Now Herz will be chancellor and AfD will be shut out of any governing coalition with CDU.
