Lutnick: Canada becoming US state 'best way' to merge economies

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Wednesday that Canada becoming a U.S. state is the best way to merge the two countries economies.
The best way, the president has said it, the best way to actually merge the economies of Canada and the United States is for Canada to become our 51st state. If they want to merge it, thats how you make it the 51st state, Lutnick said on Fox Business Networks Varney & Co.
Lutnicks comments come amid recent tension between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs. On Tuesday, President Trump said he was going to raise planned steel and aluminum tariffs against Canada due to a surcharge on electricity from the Ontario government.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said later Tuesday that he would not go forward with the surcharge in the wake of an olive branch being offered by the U.S., which is a scheduled Thursday meeting with Lutnick.

(5,170 posts)The only people making noise about Canada becoming a state or states is Trump and his band of sycophants.
Canadians have a life expectancy of 81 years compared to 77 for the U.S. Why would they want to be more like us?

(15,422 posts)each with 2 Senators and a couple or more congress critters -- most of them far more liberal than the majority of U.S. states.
Yeah, 26 new liberal senators and a passel of liberal congress critters. Even if there's a few rogue conservatives in the bunch, we'd overwhelm the MAGAts, crush the Republicans, and put an end to the Reichwing loonies.
Hey, if a guys gonna dream, may as well dream big. Not that half-assed wonder Trump envisions.

(1 post)With a population of 41 million, it would have more EC votes than California.
It is all academic though. Every politician in Canada has said no.

(31,642 posts)If we dominate the Senate to 2/3rds majority we could impeach Trump, Vance, and snot Johnson... getting us to President Schumer ( the new President Pro Tempore of the Senate ( currently Gassy ).
So even if we add 13 states and they all elect 2 Senators each... that isn't enough to impeach any of the Repukes in the line of succession. We need 85 Senators to impeach with 126 Senators. We would only have 74.

(12,561 posts)Canada has no interest in a Concept of a health plan that has been on the back burner since 2015.
Is the NRA licking their lips to take a whole nation of deprived gun owners?
Maybe Canada and Mexico can just do a squeeze play from top and bottom and the Majority of Americans that are sick of trump and his cult can just step aside and give directions as both liberate our asses.

(8,700 posts)should have told the American contigent, including Rubio, that until further notice they are persona non grata in Canada. When the plane landed they should have been denied being allowed off the plane. Refuel and go home. Tell Crumb The 1st we said "Hi".

(2,116 posts)And what Hitler said about Europe. And what rapists say to their victims, this would be easier on you if you stop fighting. I apologize to anybody that is triggered by my statement but I want to illustrate the absurdity of Lutnik's statement.
If it's too far, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will remove it from this post. You can do it privately via the DU email if you prefer.

(16 posts)...they just harden the Canadians' resolve to NEVER, EVER do business with the U.S. again!
I really think this 51st state talk is trump 2.0's attempt to desensitize the American media-viewing public; I think the plans are more nefarious.
Would not surprise me if the U.S. tried to launch a ground war against Canada, much like Russia did in Ukraine.
It wouldn't work of course, and the U.S. would get its second Civil War on top of it, but trump 2.0 is just stupid and ignorant enough to try it! First, Canada. Then, Greenland. Then, Mexico, down to Panama. The old Technocracy, Inc. map would be complete.

(13,284 posts)Rather than "make Canada the 51st state," let's reframe it as "make the Canadian provinces the 51st through 61st states."
I think Canada would prove to be more liberal overall than either Trump or the GOP wants.
Plus, I don't think Canadians are willing to give up universal healthcare and strict gun laws for what we have to offer.

(1,079 posts)Why don't the productive Blue states join the 10 provinces of Canada and let the MAGAts rot in hell.
Justice matters.
(9,388 posts)Instead of having a demented, traitorous always mad, and ignorant, delusional compulsively lying convict who's above all laws as a current king... and his fake president napoElon... wouldn't that be the self evident good thing to do?
Canada's actual King has no say in internal governance.

(1,492 posts)States Rights and Secession have never looked so good. It would be great to be a part of the Canadian system. I am sorry that democratic America no longer exists. Maybe one day it will be resurrected someday. Honestly, if we have an election in 2026, maybe we could at least take back the Congress. God help us.

(10,786 posts)Seems to work there.
But the US and Canada aren't close to being equal to merge. The United States would have to change too much to confirm to the norms of a social democratic society.
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...commerce and a lot of other collaborative activities, such as Europe, it works.
But Canada and the U.S. already have mature, dynamic economies that are based upon very disparate assets and goals.
I wouldn't put all my assets into a joint account with my next door neighbor just because they are next door.

(1,851 posts)With DC, Puerto Rico and Greenland, just think about the congressional math. That would be a total of 8 likely Dem Senators and 80 + Dem Congrescritters. We could get soooo much accomplished.
And yes, I do buy lottery tickets, on occasion.

(10,786 posts)... he should apply to join the European Union. Along with Canada.
I'm sure the USA would have to make a whole lot more changes to harmonise its economy and society than what Canada would have to do. For starters.... Universal health care.
The EU, the EFTA countries, the UK, and Canada should join up into a common market... (Basically EU lite)...
