House Republican Outraged by Social Security Office Closing in His District: 'A Slap in the Face'

Source: MEDIAite

Mar 20th, 2025, 7:38 pm

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) protested the closing down of the Hudson Valley’s only Social Security Hearing Office on Thursday, calling it a “slap in the face” to thousands of New Yorkers. “The decision to close the only Social Security Hearing Office in the Hudson Valley is a slap in the face to thousands of my constituents who rely on these services,” wrote Lawler in a social media post. “Concerns about mold don’t justify abandoning folks in the Lower Hudson Valley.”

He continued, “This office handles over 2,000 backlogged cases and conducts hundreds of in-person hearings every year. Telling my constituents that they now have to travel hours to Lower Manhattan, New Haven, the Bronx, or Goshen is completely unacceptable.”

In another post, Lawler dismissed speculation that the office was closing as a result of cuts by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and claimed that the move had instead been initiated by former President Joe Biden. “To resolve any confusion, this was an action initiated by the Biden admin,” he said, citing an email from the Social Security Administration which read, “The final decision to close the White Plains OHO was made during December 2024.”

While the closure appears to have been initiated by the Biden administration, President Donald Trump’s Social Security commissioner reportedly turned down offers to host the office elsewhere. After Rep. George Latimer (D-NY) offered to provide “County space to keep these important services in White Plains,” Trump’s Social Security commissioner declined and told White Plains residents to drive an hour away to other offices in New York and Connecticut.

You knew what this asshole was and you didn’t care. Now your constituents are getting shit on and you can’t do anything all because you wanted power.

Fuck. You.

If you had a shred or moral courage you would resign.

Here's the site for the Yonkers one: https://ssofficelocation.com/offices/new-york/yonkers/yonkers-social-security-office-10701/
So I don't know why he's saying people have to travel hours to Goshen or New Haven.

Still, it's a half hour away from the White Plains office.

While it sucks that it's closing, it's interesting it's the one in the reddest part of the immediate area.

My bet? Some of those Bedford and Chappaqua folks will complain and it will re-open. Because none of this is supposed to hurt rich people, amiright?

A list of the Social Security offices across the US expected to close this year

By MEG KINNARD
Updated 12:59 PM EDT, March 19, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — Dozens of Social Security Administration offices across the country are slated to close this year due to actions taken by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency as part of the Trump administration’s unprecedented effort to shrink the size of government.

(snip)

New York

75 S. Broadway, White Plains: May 31

332 Main St., Poughkeepsie: July 31

(snip)

All the closures (so far) are in red states except 2 states - CO and NY.

It sounds like the White Plains building had environmental issues but 45 told them to go pound sand.

But that IS interesting. A LOT of very red areas between White Plains and Poughkeepsie.

You know what I bet? Trump was socially excluded in those areas. Because while they may vote for him to keep the riff raff in line, no one wants to actually socialize with him.

One that handles hearings, not just applications and other paperwork. Even if it did start in December it is all from those budget rules the GOP shoved in back in 2010.
