Trump wants states to handle disasters. States aren't prepared

President Trump has signed an executive order directing state and local governments to "play a more active and significant role" in preparing for disasters. For months, Trump has said he's considering getting rid of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the country's disaster response arm. "I say you don't need FEMA, you need a good state government," Trump said while visiting the Los Angeles fires in January. "FEMA is a very expensive, in my opinion, mostly failed situation."
But emergency management experts say Trump's order technically wouldn't do much to shift responsibility. Currently, local and state governments are already in charge of disasters. The question is whether the Trump administration will begin withdrawing the federal resources and funding that states rely on.
When a major hurricane, flood or wildfire hits, FEMA starts working on a disaster only when requested by the state government. The agency organizes thousands of federal workers who help in disaster response and process claims for millions of dollars in aid. Even then, states and local governments still remain in charge.
Without FEMA, states would need to find thousands of additional personnel to inspect damage, distribute disaster aid and plan the rebuilding of public infrastructure. Without federal funding, states would face billions of dollars in recovery costs. After Hurricane Irma in 2017, Florida relied on more than $5.5 billion dollars from the federal government.

The same holds true for all the innocent children who are contracting measles and other preventable diseases ... it's a shame, but a pandemic (even if regional) with tragic consequences may be what's needed to wake-up the anti-vax folks. These dominoes have already been aligned... or the house of cards has already been constructed... now they all come tumbling down.
It's not like "wishful thinking" or my thoughts-and-prayers will stop it. I'm not wishing these awful things to happen. I'm merely pointing out the inevitability of it all... and hoping instead that WHEN it happens, people will wake-up and change their way of thinking.

(28,676 posts)Director Witt was given almost cabinet status, answering directly to the president.
under James Lee Witt's leadership as FEMA director from 1993 to 2001, the agency underwent a significant transformation, becoming more effective and professional in its disaster response capabilities.
Here's a more detailed look at FEMA under Witt:
Background:
James Lee Witt, a former Arkansas state official, was appointed as the first FEMA director with extensive emergency management experience, a departure from previous political appointees.
Turnaround:
Witt's leadership was instrumental in improving FEMA's image and effectiveness after criticism following Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Key Initiatives:
He focused on building a more professional and less politically-driven agency.
He emphasized preparedness, service to the public, and collaboration with state and local officials.
He championed the importance of mitigation efforts to reduce the cost of disasters.
Notable Disasters:
Witt oversaw FEMA's response to numerous disasters, including the 1997 Red River flood, a major earthquake, and a dozen serious hurricanes.
FEMA's Transformation:
Under Witt, FEMA became known for its improved disaster relief services and gained a reputation for professionalism.
Transition to DHS:
In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, FEMA became part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2003.
Post-FEMA:
Witt went on to become a "disaster consultant to corporate America" and continues to work in the field of emergency management.
Only took Bush 4 years to restore incompentency with "heck of a job Brownie"

(8,723 posts)They aren't able to cope with these things without Federal assistance.
FEMA has the experience, manpower, and resources to effectively help state and local governments deal with large scale disasters; especially when they involve multiple states.
To say that FEMA is a "mostly failed situation" is typical Trumpian bullshit.
He always hates anything the Federal Government does to help people. He sees it as money out of his pocket; money he could redirect into the pockets of people he recognizes as being valuable to him.

There is technically "a process" where the state has to assess the damage and cost it out before submitting a bill to the government, along with a request for a disaster declaration.

I have traveled much of this country. I notice the quality of a state's Infrastructure, Government services, quality of life. Living in Minnesota, which is a higher tax state, we have results to show what our tax dollars pay for. I-494 has been under constant improvement since the 1980's. Our airport(MSP) is one of the BEST in the country. We are in the Top 5 BEST states to live, work, and do business in.
Minnesota is not perfect, but it is a hell of a lot better than any Republican led state. GO GOPHERS!

(28,452 posts)I don't understand exactly why so many people would prefer to live in an awful, Republican controlled state just because it doesn't get snow. Or because taxes are low. There is an awful lot more to quality of life than snow or cold.
I have also lived in more states (a total of seven) than a lot of people, so I often have a perspective someone who has only lived in one state and not travelled very much can't possibly have.
