China has called US Vice-President JD Vance "ignorant and impolite" after he said America had been borrowing money from "Chinese peasants".
Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters on Tuesday that Vance's comments - which had already caused a stir on Chinese social media - were "surprising and sad".
Vance made the comments on Thursday, during an interview on Fox News where he defended US President Donald Trump's tariffs - which are currently fuelling tensions between the world's two largest economies.
"We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture," the vice-president said.
On Monday, Trump gave China - one of the world's largest holders of US Treasury bonds - until Tuesday to scrap its 34% counter tariff or face an additional 50% tax on goods imported into the US.

(18,690 posts)For one thing, if I were Xi I'd be asking myself the same question about Taiwan that Hitler asked himself in 1938: "What is to be gained by waiting?" Our military leadership has probably never been more incompetent, which has to effect the morale of the entire structure.
Secondly, China owns $760.80 billion in U.S. Treasury securities.
Thirdly, it is so disrespectful. China can hurt us in ways we cannot even imagine if it wants to.
It reflects poorly on all of us, because people in China see what Vance says and think "Americans think this about us" and decide they hate all of us.

(8,991 posts)Too much of what we need comes from China. Besides, they hold a lot of our debt as US treasury bonds.
A sell off might hurt both countries, but they might do it just to save face.

That country is the only reason Buick still exists as a car brand. China is their largest market by far much bigger than North America.
Idiot.

And by the way, "trash" in this case has to do with nastiness and stupidity and selfishness. It has nothing to do with status or money.
