FAA announces new air traffic control system in hopes of taming busy skies

The FAA will embark on an ambitious three-year plan to modernize America's air traffic control systems and phase out the "outdated technologies that are unable to meet" modern demands, officials said Thursday.
The federal government has been under pressure to address mounting traveler concerns in the wake of fatal crashes, ongoing delays and an embarrassing, recent revelation that the Newark airspace controllers lost all contact with pilots last week after a failure of the copper wiring that transmits radar data from New York to Philadelphia TRACON.
President Donald Trump said he sympathizes with passengers trapped in airports due to air traffic delays. "I'm sorry what youre going through with the terminals, but were going to get them fixed up," Trump said in a phone call with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Trump said too much air traffic data and communications run through "equipment thats from the 1960s if you can believe it, doesnt even mesh with the plane."
Duffy acknowledged the administration will need considerable assistance from Capitol Hill. "I need help. I cant do it by myself and its going to take the help of the Congress to make that happen," he said. "So to do it in three or four years, we need all of the money up front."

(5,999 posts)Three years, huh? Just enough time to either (a) drop it in someone else's lap to clean up, or (b) get a weary, impoverished serfdom to "just accept" it.

(1,889 posts)That tried to install new enterprise management software that was supposed to manage and integrate all aspects of the plant into one system. This was a single plant with 300 or so employees. It took them well over a year to get it operational and it still had so many issues they ended up scrapping the whole thing and starting from scratch. I can't for the life of me seeing them redesigning a system as complex as air traffic control in 3 years. But hey, at least someone is going to get paid upfront, that will surely encourage them to get it right faster.

(1,035 posts)he said would easily be demonstrated by the end of 2017. But instead, crickets. But that didn't stop Musk from getting many billions of dollars from his stock fraud operation -- all up front, of course.

(152,346 posts)As noted in this thread, the timing of these catastrophic failures seems to align with the incoming administration. I expect the DOGE boys slid some kind of code into some of the systems and this is the result. I know Muskrat was adding stuff to the Atlantic City, NJ airport facility - apparently StarLink related.

From whose ass did they pull this? The ATC system is MASSIVE. You dont just make changes without testing and testing and testing.
And where is the competitive RFP outlining the requirements? Who are the potential bidders? How long will that take, Mr. Duffy?
And #1: Wheres the money????
Like his first administration, his second is staffed with malcontents who have no idea what the government does, how it works, nor its complexity.
