House passes bill to make 'Gulf of America' name change permanent

Source: Good Morning America

The Republican-led House voted Thursday to codify President Donald Trump's Gulf of America executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

It passed with a 211 to 206 vote with Rep. Don Bacon as the only Republican to vote against the measure.

The legislation, which was introduced by Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, codifies an executive order from President Donald Trump to rename the body of water.

Its fate in the Senate is more of a challenge, given that it will need bipartisan cooperation to overcome a filibuster. Leader John Thune has not indicated whether he'll put the measure on the floor for a vote.

The fact is the rest of the world will still call it the Gulf of Mexico like it's been since 1450.

Where the f*ck is the benefit to the country in changing the name of the Gulf? It's all Trump's chaos-generating performative and distraction bullshit. Dipshit MTG gets credit for sponsoring a bill and dipstick Mike Johnson can brag about passing a resolution. And besides all that, Trump's name change move is academic.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jan/20/trump-gulf-mexico-executive-order#:~:text=Within%20the%20US%2C%20the%20US,usage%20across%20the%20federal%20government.

There is no formal international agreement or protocol for the naming of maritime areas, and no international body has the final word on maritime names, although the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) seeks to standardise names and resolve disputes.

Unlike other measures announced by Trump on his first day as the 47th US president, the name change was not the subject of an executive order – although he said that would happen in “a short time from now”.

In theory, Trump action would be sufficient to change the Gulf’s name in official documents within the US, but other countries would not be obliged to follow suit.

God I can'twait until these bastards are pulled out of power! It's disgusting. We're a third world shithole country at this point and unfortunately too many of us are too poor to leave. I understand that many people don't agree with that sentiment of leaving but I really would love to have some universal health Care and live in a place that actually has a better quality and standard of life!

After MAGA Republicans rush to rename the Gulf to please Trump, he may raffle off naming rights to an oil company that buys the most Trump raffle tickets. Is the Gulf of Exxon in our future ?

Mexico, which owns part of it, probably likes the existing name. Cuba also owns some and maybe they would like Gulf of Cuba.

In what world does that make sense? Roe was never law. RBG pointed that out time and again even stating the decision by the court was standing on the thinnest of one leg. When we had majorities we should've codified it immediately.

This is fucking war. We better start using their tactics against them. We better get off our asses and fight these fuckers like there's no tomorrow.... because there won't be.

So MTG sponsored this legislation. Given her record of not sponsoring too many bills that passed, may we all salute her on this spectacular legislative achievement of her career with any sign of recognition we choose!

That would stop the bill in it's tracks. Am I wrong in my understanding?
