'No safe spaces': ICE raids will target farms and hotels despite Trump's vow

The Department of Homeland Security on Monday reversed internal guidance that would have shielded farms, hotels and restaurants from workplace immigration raids a sharp contrast to President Donald Trumps recent suggestion that he was sympathetic to concerns from agricultural and hospitality industries.
ICE agents were told in an agency-wide call Monday to continue workplace enforcement operations at agricultural businesses, hotels and restaurants, the Washington Post reported, citing multiple officials familiar with the directive.
The reversal is a clear indication of Trumps intent to charge ahead with his promise to launch the largest mass deportation effort in U.S. history even as business leaders plead for relief and warn of labor shortages.
There will be no safe spaces for industries who harbor violent criminals or purposely try to undermine ICEs efforts, Tricia McLaughlin, a DHS assistant secretary for DHS, told the Post Monday. Worksite enforcement remains a cornerstone of our efforts to safeguard public safety, national security and economic stability.

It was just four days ago that ICE leadership sent a memo directing agents to hold on all worksite enforcement investigations/operations on agriculture (including aquaculture and meat packing plants), restaurants and operating hotels. That move came hours after Trump posted to his Truth Social account that changes are coming to help protect our Farmers.
Trump had been pulled in two directions on the issue, recently coming under pressure from executives in the agriculture and hospitality industries to loosen up on a sweeping deportation policy that was costing them migrant workers, according to the Post.
But a White House official said last week that no policy changes were being considered. In a subsequent Truth Social post, Trump reversed course, writing that ICE should do all in their power to deliver on his deportation agenda. ....................

(7,438 posts)ICE is the US Gestapo. We are truly in dangerous times. The leader of the country is deranged and deep into dementia, if not full blown Alzheimers. The country is ruled by an unelected nazi advisor, with all our personal data and national security information being downloaded by unelected criminal hackers. Please will.someone put this country out of its misery. In now way is it by the people, for the people any longer.

Of course, if people start calling him Taco loudly enough, he might reverse his reversal of his reversal, but then that would be more chickening out, so he could reverse his reversal of . . .

Hell keep immigrants in his own properties but continue to raid all the rest. Eliminate competition and increase the misery and cruelty in immigrant communities. a double win for him.

Wow -- imagine the potential for extortion! Support and donate to the GOP or lose your workers.

(165,815 posts)would be "boutique" types that don't have the large numbers of workers that the huge avocado or almond or citrus farms have.
There is this fantasy about California that is based on the coastal urban population that provides the majority of the (blue) votes. But like pretty much every other state, the vast majority of land is "rural", and other than the hospitality industry impact to the cities if they do indeed target any (R)-leaning hotel chains, it is gonna hit those RED rural area agribusinesses.
Remember GOP has always = "business" and the pushback was coming from them, which garnered the original "exemption" that just got repealed.

Wonder where old droopy-pants was when Miller (I'm sure it was he!) changed the order to ease Trump's deportation agenda.
