'US homeland' now includes Greenland after major shakeup by Pentagon

Source: Raw Story

June 17, 2025 2:08PM ET

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken action to have Greenland declared part of the "U.S. homeland" to be defended by American forces, according to a report in Military Times.

The Pentagon announced Tuesday that it was shifting responsibility for Greenland from U.S. European Command to U.S. Northern Command, with the Department of Defense framing "the revision as part of a broader review of its Unified Command Plan, which divides the world into separate military units and outlines the roles and responsibilities of U.S. combatant commands," Military Times reported.

The U.S.-run Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland "is one of the most strategically important military sites in the world," according to The New York Times. Since retaking office in January, President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to annex the Danish territory in the name of national security. “One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” Trump said of Greenland during a March speech before a joint session of Congress.

In a statement, a Pentagon spokesperson claimed, "[This] change will strengthen the Joint Force’s ability to defend the U.S. homeland, contributing to a more robust defense of the western hemisphere and deepening relationships with Arctic allies and partners."

I hope Denmark bombs the white house. Not content with the trouble pot he stirred with Israel re: Gaza, nor content enough to bring on the brink of WWIII in the Middle East with Iran, NOW he's "assuming" command of Greenland defense. I'm sorry, I hold no ill will towards Greenland, but if trump wants to defend it, he can do it with his own damn dollars. I want MY tax dollars going to ensure that all Seniors get their SS checks every month, medicaid is assured for those that need it, and those who need help with "food security" (the new euphemism for starving) are quickly and directly assisted.

NO MORE of my dollars for trumps WARS! (NOW its beginning to sound like the 70's chants!). Furthermore, I wouldn't hold Greenland at fault at all if they were launch a damn rocket directly at the white house while dumbshit was in it. It's going to take an exorcism, as well as several cleansing rites, to make the place habitable again for real, caring people. Might as well start over from scratch.

I hope the Greenlanders don't feel as nervous right now about what trump will do... as I do every month wondering if he's gonna clawback SS money. And I really hope Denmark and Greenland can land some kind of mark on trump. I promise I won't take it as an insult the US! Short of bringing together the NATO nations and bombing him, isn't there some kind of committee or something they can go to at the U.N. which will tell trump to keep his nose out of other country's business? How much is Putin paying him to make sure the water ways are ice free and just for russian transports?

.... The DoD divides the world (and even space) up into various commands. For instance, the command responsible for the Asia-Pacific region is U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM). That command would include the Peoples Republic of China. We didn't ask nor did China authorize us to include China in USINDOPACOM. We did it because that is the part of the world that USINDOPACOM is designed to cover.

So this is just a hierarchical designation as to which high ranking officers are responsible for that geographic region. It used to be one group, now it's another.

Actually, no big deal.

There's the speech.

There's the initial reporting. It's hearsay, but the basis for later 'takes' and 'spin.'

There's rawstory.com. It's derivative.

Closer-to-the-truth is the initial reporting, a few lines into the rawstory.com text and a single click:

https://www.militarytimes.com/pentagon/2025/06/17/pentagon-shifts-greenland-to-us-northern-command-in-shakeup/

The structure is a top-ranked Google offering:

This illustration shows the geographic areas of responsibility for the geographic commands. Note the squiggly line along the edge of Greenland that puts Greenland in the European region. What this change will do is draw that line around the other side of Greenland to include it in the North American region. That's it. That's all there is to it.

So this is just a hierarchical designation as to which high ranking officers are responsible for that geographic region. It used to be one group, now it's another.

Actually, no big deal. Just another stunt.

Just another Tr*mp stunt blown out of proportion.

Denmark's answer to the previous threats from the US is right now a military exercise at Greenland, under the command of Danish Arctic Command, which is actually responsible for military operations in and around Greenland - with Soldiers from a Danish infantry battalion supported by the Royal Danish Navy and the Royal Danish Air Force.

In these days the Danish presence at Greenland outnumbers all of the U.S. Air Force and Space Force personnel permanently stationed at the U.S.-run Pituffik Space Base.

42. All this really means is ...
Wed Jun 18, 2025, 01:01 PM

determining which four-star combatant commander does the Colonel at Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule AFB) in Greenland reports to.

That is pretty much it as far as I can tell.

It has nothing to do with the Greenland or Danish governments. It certainly doesn't give us any sovereignty over Greenland that we did not already have (by having that base there for the last forty+ years).

As others have said publicizing this is just a distraction.
