'Lightnin Strikes' singer, Pittsburgh's Lou Christie, dies after illness

Source: Audacy.com

Pittsburgh singer-songwriter Lou Christie had died. The singer behind “Lightnin’ Strikes” and other hits, died after a “brief illness” his family said in an Instagram post. KDKA Radio confirmed Christie’s passing with his management team.

“He was cherished not only by his family and close friends, but also by countless fans whose lives he douched with his kindness and generosity,” the Sacco family wrote.

Born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco, Christie graduated from Moon Area High School, finding big success soon after. Christie had two, top ten hits in 1963, “Two Faces Have I” and “The Gypsy Cried”. He hit #1 with “Lightnin’ Strikes” in 1965.

That was followed by “I’m Gonna Make You Mine” in 1969 at #10 and his last charting hit, “Beyond The Blue Horizon” reaching #80 in 1974. Christie performed until 2023. One of his last shows was at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg in 2021.

1. Aw, that's too bad. I was not familiar with him until I watched one of those PBS doo wop specials.

A lot of those performances are understandably just a shadow of what they were in their prime, but it’s still a pleasant trip down Nostalgia Lane.

But then this guy came out and sang Lightnin’ Strikes and he was electric! I’d missed his introduction so I grabbed my ipad to find out who he was. I have no idea if he sang it in the original key or a bit lower, but he still had “it” at the time that special was filmed.

Dumb lyrics! There are a lot of those from that period. I'll be singing along and realize what's coming out of my mouth and I laugh.

I remember that flappette. The Chicago stations didn't ban it though. At least not WLS & WCFL.

RIP, Lou Christie. Falsettos were big back then (Christie, the Four Seasons with Frankie Valli on lead, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, the Newbeats are examples). I have all those recordings.
