Mamdani Stuns Cuomo in N.Y.C. Mayoral Primary, as Ex-Governor Concedes
Source: New York Times
Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman, built a significant lead over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who conceded the race. Mr. Cuomo left the door open to running in the general election. . . .
Unless one candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the initial count under the citys ranked-choice voting system, counting will continue next week.
At a moment when Democrats are searching for an answer to President Trump, Mr. Mamdani ran on an unabashedly progressive agenda, promising to make buses free, freeze the rent on rent-stabilized apartments and raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers. His promise of generational change appears to have resonated with large numbers of voters. . . .
The fall campaign could be unusually competitive. Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, skipped the primary to seek a second term as an independent. Curtis Sliwa, the 2021 Republican nominee, secured his partys nomination without a primary, and Jim Walden, a lawyer, is running as an independent.

I'm not from NY so I know very little about this race, other than Cuomo is a sexual predator.

His political views are Democratic Socialist side of our party. His signature issue is affordable housing

(50,982 posts)Dems should be able to win the general election in blue NYC unless Cuomo runs as an independent.

(1,617 posts)How does that break out for ranked choice? Who is the secondary for each of those? I'm not even sure TBH.
Mamdani/Cuomo?
Cuomo/Adams?
Adams/Cuomo?
Silwa/Adams?
Maybe? I can see arguments for variations on that...

(21,605 posts)NYC will only use ranked choice voting in primary and special elections for city offices including:
Mayor
Public Advocate
Comptroller
Borough President
City Council

(21,605 posts)I see no circumstances that have Sliwa winning though.

(50,982 posts)so one of the Dems should still be able to win the general election.

(24,870 posts)Cuomo has filed as an independent (he did that prior to May 10). If he runs, he could steal votes from Mamdani -- but he will also likely take from Eric Adams (running as independent) and Sliwa.
If Cuomo doesn't run, then it's a case of how many older Black voters choose a different candidate. I don't know the breakdown of this vote, but polling prior to the election showed Cuomo doing well among older Black voters, and voters age 50-59.
If everything stays as normal Mamdani wins. If Cuomo plays sore loser, then it's a toss up (IMO)
I know very little about Jim Walden (he is likely a nothing running as an independent. But, I've read he has almost a million dollars on hand and could get a lot more from former federal prosecutors that support him). He has a reputation as a 'Good Government' guy. A somewhat deserved one, as well.

(1,329 posts)Republicans have been extremely successful spreading the corporate mantra of "Disruption" which emphasizes destruction of established ways.
Democrats must reclaim and spread the mantra of "Change" as positive reform and initiative.

(26,037 posts)Cuomo to do what is best for Cuomo, not New Yorkers. Which means he will likely be an independent candidate.

(9,211 posts)once the ranked choice is applied. Numbers like that should encourage Cuomo to give it up and not run in the general election.

There was one little clip on NPR last night. Kubo called Zohran Kennedy. She laughable and Zohran just sliced him to bits gently respectfully politely with facts.

(35,922 posts)I love the economic populism (we need it, we're getting killed by the billionaires - literally); but there are issues regarding whether he is antisemitic. That is the weakness from what I've read the past few days. Both republicans and/or independents will do whatever they can to use that as a wedge, so he will need to address it convincingly, sooner rather than later.

The horror.
TBF
(35,922 posts)like I said it will need to be addressed in some form, so as not to be made into a wedge issue, because it will. But I will also say the republicans will grasp at any slight hint, no matter how slight, to blow something into a wedge issue because it is what they do.
I focus on the economics, always have, always will.

(3,262 posts)He'll still toss money Democrats way, but these days it's more to hedge things than an actual belief in Democratic ideals.
He was a solid believer in the Genocide Joe bullshit that the Russians cooked up to convince Palestine supporters to put Trump back into office.
500k down the toilet with Mamdrani beating out Cuomo. He's since swapped his support over to Adams, and has been pushing for Cuomo to not run third party and for Sliwa to not run at all. A push in certain MAGA circles to deport Mamdani would fit with his efforts to play kingmaker in this election.
