Jazz Musician Chuck Mangione, of 'Feels So Good' and King of the Hill Fame, Dies at 84

Source: People

Jazz musician Chuck Mangione, a two-time Grammy winner known for his ubiquitous ‘70s hit “Feels So Good,” has died. He was 84.

Mangione died at home in his sleep on Tuesday, July 22, a spokesperson for the star confirms to PEOPLE.

With more than 30 albums under his belt and 14 Grammy Award nominations, Mangione was a prolific musician who played the flugelhorn and trumpet. He also had a notable recurring role on the animated sitcom King of the Hill, where he played himself as a Mega Lo Mart celebrity spokesperson.

In 1977, his jazz album Feels So Good hit No. 2 on the Billboard albums chart, and Mangione found crossover success with its title track, which has appeared in everything from Fargo and Doctor Strange to a famous Memorex commercial with Ella Fitzgerald.

RIP. Another great musician lost.

He died Tuesday, but that wasn't made public till today. I'm wondering if his family waited to tell media that he'd died because Ozzy Osboune's death got so much media attention Tuesday. There may also have been a delayed announcement of the death of Golden Earring founder-singer-songwriter-guitarist George Kooymans, whose death was in the news yesterday, with some of those stories saying he'd died Tuesday.

I didn't listen to a lot of jazz, but I loved Mangione's music.

Saw him live the first time when Feels So Good was just released. We all loved the song but had no idea it would become a mega hit. Thanks for all the great music, Chuck. RIP!

There's no place for me to hide
The thoughts of all the times I've cried
And felt this pain
That I have known
Because I needed just to hear
That special something
And then one day
You just appeared
You said, "Hello"
"Let's make love along the way"
Your name is music to my heart
I'll always really love you
Feels so good when I'm with you
I can't believe you love me too
With you it feels like it should feel
With you it feels so good

He was a local hero. His brother, Gap, was a friend of our high-school band director. My sister was in the band, and a trumpet player. She was a huge fan of Chuck's. So was I.

Their senior year, Gap with Chuck's permission put together a field show for them using a medley of Chuck's greatest hits. It was so beautiful and I was so proud of my sis I cried. A lady next to me asked why I was crying. When I told her why she said, "I don't blame you. They were amazing." They won competition after competition and I believe Chuck's music and Gap's show played a huge part.

My favorite songs of his were Hill Where The Lord Hides, Chase the Clouds Away, and the Land of Make Believe. On the later the lyrics are beautiful, but I prefer it without the singing and just listening to Chuck's awesome horn playing.

May he RIP. His beautiful music was a gift to all who heard it.

Land of Make Believe and Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor both hugely affected the drum and bugle corps community in the 70s and 80s, too.

His music touched so many people.

He said it was dedicated to his father.

I went to two of his concerts: Corpus Christi, Texas and Eugene, Oregon. Memorable and timeless music.

The first time I heard 'Feel So Good' on the radio I immediately went out and bought the cassette. Something about that song resonated with me.

I then proceeded to wear out that one track on the tape by repeatedly rewinding and playing it, over and over.

I was stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi at the time, and this one song spurred me on to start going to various local performances, usually at Pete Fountain's or some of the more obscure places in New Orleans.

When I got to Germany I haunted the local record shops and really started my jazz collection. Mangione's one cut steered me into Grover Washington, Dave Brubeck, Bix Beiderbecke, Django Reinhardt and the rest. I was hooked, and still favor local jazz over most other genres.

R.I.P., Chuck - your music made a HUGE difference to a LOT of people!
