Trump orders Commerce Dept. to begin work on new census

Source: The Hill

08/07/25 7:52 AM ET

President Trump said Thursday morning he has ordered the Commerce Department to begin working on a new census, emphasizing that those who are in the country illegally will not be counted in the total.

“I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote in a Thursday morning post on Truth Social.

“People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the president added.

The Hill has reached out to the Commerce Department for comment.

Ironically, the fact that the 3/5th of a person crap was put there to GIVE "more population" to the slave states using the count of people (enslaved Africans) who were not considered "citizens" at the time (which is what the 13th & 14th Amendments finally remedied), is a case in point of how absurd they are.

The Census is mandated in the Constitution to count every resident of the US. It can't be an exact count now because of nonresponse but the final census count comes as close as possible

US Constitution Article 1, Section 2
The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.

US Constitution, 14th amendment
Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed.

The Constitution explicitly says all persons are persons are to be counted, NOT just citizens.

It does show his dishonesty and stupidity though. He says they would use "the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024". Election results would contain zero information about the population of the country, nor would it have any information about undocumented immigrants since they can't even vote. So there is no information to be gained from the Presidential Election of 2024.

Aug 2025

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he has ordered the Commerce Department to re-run the count of the U.S. population that took place five years ago while excluding the counting of any person in the country without legal status. Writing on Truth Social, Trump said he’d asked the department, which oversees the U.S. Census Bureau, to “immediately” start what he called “a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures” making use of “the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024.” He also said the new count would exclude anyone in the country illegally. Trump’s demand for a new census excluding migrants come as he is desperately pushing for Republican-led states to redraw congressional districts to make it harder if not impossible for Democrats to gain a majority of seats in next year’s mid-term elections.

This reads like he wants the commerce Dept. to come up with numbers based on the last census and the last election. what the last election has to do with it I have no idea. There is not enough time to do a whole new census before next year's election.

I'm not sure why other articles didn't include that context. It shouldn't matter though. The Constitution explicitly says the Census is to count all residents of the US not just citizens. And without a citizenship question being part of the Census, there is no way to count the number of non-citizens that were part of the 2020 Census. Not to mention the 2024 election results would contain zero information to identify non citizens. Also, Trump is too stupid to realize, excluding undocumented immigrants would not net Republicans any seats. They would gain a seat each in Alabama & Ohio but lose a seat in Texas and Florida. The Democrats would lose a seat in California and gain one in Minnesota. Net change = 0.

In fact, it takes over 10 years to do all the work necessary to be able to conduct the Census. Work on the 2030 Census began in 2019. It would literally be impossible to conduct a new Census now before 2030 - it will take 5 more years to get all the infrastructure in place to do it.

https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/decennial-census/decade/2030/2030-census-main.html

Planning for the 2030 Census began in 2019. We are now in the Development and Integration Phase. This phase focuses on ongoing research, testing (including the 2026 Census Test and the 2028 Dress Rehearsal), adjustments based on results of testing, and, lastly, continuing operational planning. This work enables an efficient and accurate count in 2030.

The 2030 Census will count residents of the United States and five U.S. territories and will mark the 25th population count in the United States.

The data collected by the census is used to determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives (a process called apportionment) and is also used to adjust or redraw electoral districts based on where populations have increased or decreased. The results also inform decisions about allocating hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding to communities across the country—for hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other critical programs and services.

I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024. People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

The Constitution mandates a nationwide census every 10 years to determine how congressional seats are apportioned among the states which the 14th Amendment adds should include the “whole number of persons in each state.”

The push comes during a high-profile clash in Texas in which Republicans are campaigning to redraw electoral maps. Texas Democrats fled the state last week in a dramatic effort to protest the GOP-led redistricting bill, which could carve out up to five new seats for conservatives.

The Supreme Court blocked a citizenship question from the 2020 census during Trump’s first term and declined to rule on whether a president has the authority to exclude undocumented immigrants from apportionment counts, a legal question likely to resurface if Trump’s proposal advances.

not citizens. (Note the 14th amendment uses the word PERSONS not citizens). It's even more clear than the birthright citizenship question which is 100% clear in itself.

Ironically, asking a citizenship question may actually be constitutional, but using the answers to that question in the apportionment process is blatantly unconstitutional.

It's of course another one of his distractions and red meat to his idiot followers but like a lot of things he "orders" it sounds good to the idiots but all he's really doing is what he is supposed to do anyway. They are already in the early planning stages for 2030 so he's created an order telling them to not count non-citizens in the 2030 census but he worded it to make it sound like the new census would be now and of course the media (and us!) have taken that assumption and run with it and given him more press coverage. This is all he ever does and we all fall for it every single time.
