Michael and Susan Dell announced Tuesday that they have committed $6.25 billion to fund investment accounts for some 25 million American children. The couple’s donation will be the largest ever devoted to American children, according to Invest America, a nonprofit advocacy group partnered with the Dells.

“It’s designed to help families feel supported from the start and encourage them to keep saving as their children grow,” Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, told CNBC in an interview. “We know that when children have accounts like this, they’re much more likely to graduate from high school, from college, buy a home, start a business and less likely to be incarcerated.”

The Dells’ commitment goes hand in hand with a new federal government program that allows parents to open tax-advantaged investment accounts for children under 18 with Social Security numbers. Under the federal program, U.S. citizens born from the beginning of 2025 through 2028 will receive a federal grant of $1,000 to seed those so-called Trump accounts. Parents will be able to open and contribute to these accounts starting on July 4, 2026, with IRS guidance yet to be issued.

The Dells have committed to seed Trump accounts with $250 for children who are 10 or under who were born before Jan. 1, 2025. According to Invest America, the pledged funds will cover 25 million children age 10 and under in ZIP codes with a median income of $150,000 or less. “We want to help the children that weren’t part of the government program,” Dell said.

And I expect not one family or kid will see a dime. It'll be grifted away for some real estate venture while there will be "problems" with whatever database and website they set up.

People don't even have enough money for food or rent/mortgage. Many are rapidly going into debt and will have ZERO to "save". They are spending MORE for less thanks to tariffs.

That is like putting your name on buildings you don't even own.

Using other people's money. What a racket. MAGA probably, on the whole, too slow to pick up on it. How much Trump family money is being pledged and, more importantly, if they pledge some, where did they get it?

That's probably a week's worth of groceries.

Nice gift, fuckheads.

Also, in no way shape or form does this offset the multi-year tax break these fuckers are getting and the "gift" is deductible.

I looked at that and immediately thought about the math.

$250 is not impactful. This underscores the fallacy of charity. This would make the Dell’s feel self-righteous and smug while providing a tax break for them and not really impacting those who need help.

Beyond that regarding charity, the issues faced every day by those who need it would suck up every asset of charitable organizations were they liquidated. Only government can bring to bear the resources but as long as the political economy of this country rewards greed while casting those who need help as morally flawed (with a healthy dollop of racism/misogyny throw in) we will not see the actions taken that need to be taken.

My guess is that the one-per-centers, after they started paying their fair share of taxes, would make it a lot easier for the next group of 2-to-5-per-centers. When all these extremely wealthy, privileged Americans took on their share of the tax burden, it would be far less of a burden on the rest of us.

Why any family with a 6-figure income is still considered underprivileged.

What money doesn't go into trump's pocket, will go for rent and groceries, if they can even touch it immediately. It will be like trump's bright idea of sending health insurance funds directly to people for healthcare.

Critics point out the accounts do little to help children in their early years, when they’re most vulnerable and most likely to be in poverty. They also say the accounts do little to offset the cuts the Trump administration and congressional Republicans have made to other programs that benefit young people and their families, including food assistance and Medicaid. Republicans created the accounts in the same Trump tax bill that reduced spending for some of those programs.

And even with the contribution from the government, critics say the Trump Accounts will widen the wealth gap. Affluent families that can afford to make the maximum pretax contribution to the accounts will realize the greatest benefits. Poor families who can’t afford to set aside money for the accounts will benefit the least. Assuming a 7% return, the $1,000 in seed money would grow to roughly $3,570 over 18 years.

And don't even think Trump will allocate that money even if it is a cheesy $250 per family Dell. Fuck...that would barely buy school supplies for two years where I live.
