Trump naming special envoy to Greenland angers Denmark, prompting it to call in U.S. ambassador

Source: CBS News/AFP

Updated on: December 22, 2025 / 7:32 AM EST

Copenhagen, Denmark — Denmark said Monday it would summon the U.S. ambassador after President Trump appointed a special envoy to Greenland, the Danish autonomous territory he has often expressed interest in obtaining.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Mr. Trump has said the U.S. needs the resource-rich island for security reasons and has refused to rule out the use of force to secure it. On Sunday, Mr. Trump appointed Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Monday he was "deeply angered" by the move and warned Washington to respect Denmark's sovereignty. In a post on social media platform Sunday night, Mr. Trump said Landry "understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country's Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World." Landry responded directly to Mr. Trump on social media, saying, "It's an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S."

The Danish foreign minister told television TV2 the Landry appointment and statements by Mr. Trump and Landry were "totally unacceptable" and said his ministry would call in the U.S. ambassador in coming days "to get an explanation." "As long as we have a kingdom in Denmark that consists of Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland, we cannot accept that there are those who undermine our sovereignty," he said.

Each state gets TWO SENATORS and at least one REPRESENTATIVE. Because Representatives are based on population, Canada would have 5 - 7 House members. What if all or most of these are Democrats?

    Article IV

    (snip)

    Section 3.

New states may be admitted by the Congress into this union; but no new states shall be formed or erected within the jurisdiction of any other state; nor any state be formed by the junction of two or more states, or parts of states, without the consent of the legislatures of the states concerned as well as of the Congress.

    (snip)

    https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/articleiv

I.e., Congress would need to pass a law "enabling" creation of the states and the President would need to sign that and that would come with Reps. & Senators.

However since the GOP hijacked Congress, if by some draconian reason they decide to invade and take over a country/territory, they would probably leave them as "territories" like D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. VI, etc., where they only get some cursory non-voting "Delegates" and no Senators.

That is how Australia started. But Australia was already a territory of Great Britain!

Talk about another DISTRACTION as well as diplomatic folly. This land grab would appear to be an attack on a NATO Nation. Would it not?

Trump is threatening to take over a NATO country. If NATO takes it seriously, resources must be diverted to defend Greenland.
I wonder if Greenland can just decline to accept the credentials of the new envoy and not allow him entry?
The new envoy is from Louisiana. I bet he had to look up “envoy” in the dictionary.

the narrative about the "safety, security, and survival of our allies" is bullshit. The administration knows that a majority of Americans (and a near-totality of MAGAs) are geographically illiterate; most Americans could not locate Greenland on a map. Or Denmark, for that matter. Furthermore, a lot of Americans wouldn't know that Greenland/Denmark are already fall within our sphere of "security."

Add Greenland to the US will add TWO SENATORS and ONE REPRESENTATIVE, most likely DEMOCRATS.

Add Canada to the US will add TWO SENATORS and 5 - 7 REPRESENTATIVES, most likely all DEMOCRATS.

Adding both Greenland and Canada to the US likely will add four Democratic Senators and 6 - 8 Democratic members of the House.

Does he really want to do that???

The Orange moronic idiot is going after resources like others have done in the past. There is a book titled "Overthrow" which documents other democracies being overthrown by the USA for resources. So the Orangutan and his Maralago buddies have decided to use the Putin playbook and just take forcefully what other countries have. We are way past the time for the congress to use the 25th ammendment.

The governor already has a full-time job, but the Republican has apparently accepted a new and unexpected side gig.

Why does Trump want Greenland? “National security.”

Why should Trump’s ballroom vanity project proceed? “National security.”

Why is Trump killing the wind energy industry? “National security.”

Why does Trump hate the New York Times? “National security.”

The pattern is ... not subtle.

    https://www.ms.now/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/in-a-weird-move-trump-taps-louisianas-landry-to-serve-as-a-special-envoy-to-greenland

Gov. Jeff Landry already has his hands full with a full-time job, but the Louisiana Republican has apparently accepted a new and unexpected side gig. Reuters reported:

President Donald Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry on Sunday as his special envoy to Greenland, drawing renewed criticism from Denmark and Greenland over Washington’s interest in the mineral-rich Arctic island. […]

Landry, in a post on X, thanked Trump: ‘It’s an honor to serve … in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!’

Late last year, when Trump was still in his post-election transition period, he announced plans to try to annex Greenland for reasons he struggled to explain. In the weeks and months that followed, the Republican suggested he was quite serious about his imperialistic ambitions — in March, he refused to take the possible use of force off the table — and as 2025 comes to an end, the president has tapped Landry as a special envoy because, as he put it, the governor “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security.”

Everything about this story remains quite odd, in part because the White House continues to infuriate Denmark, a longtime NATO ally, and in part because Greenland clearly has no interest in becoming part of the United States.....

Indeed, despite the fact that special envoys have tended to be used for areas facing international crises, Trump tapped others for envoy roles, leading to inevitable diplomatic confusion about who, exactly, speaks on behalf of the administration.

With the addition of Landry to the diplomatic team, the problem is suddenly worse for reasons the White House has yet to explain
