Fear and confusion in Nigerian village hit in US strike, as locals say no history of ISIS in area

Source: CNN World

PUBLISHED Dec 26, 2025, 8:06 PM ET

Abuja, Nigeria - A day after part of a missile fired by the United States hit their village, landing just meters from its only medical facility, the people of Jabo in northwestern Nigeria are in a state of shock and confusion. Suleiman Kagara, a resident of this quiet and predominantly Muslim farming community in Tambuwal district of Sokoto state, told CNN he heard a loud blast and saw flames as a projectile flew overhead at around 10 p.m. on Thursday.

Soon after, it came crashing down, exploding on impact with the ground and sending the villagers fleeing in fear. “We couldn’t sleep last night,” Kagara said. “We’ve never seen anything like this before.” Kagara did not realize it at the time, but what he was witnessing was part of a US strike that President Donald Trump would later refer to as a “Christmas present” for terrorists.

Not long after the impact in Jabo, Trump declared on Thursday that the US had carried out a “powerful and deadly strike” against ISIS militants in the region, who he accused of “targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even centuries!”

According to US Africa Command, the operation neutralized multiple ISIS militants. But Trump’s explanation has left Kagara and his fellow villagers scratching their heads. While parts of Sokoto face challenges with banditry, kidnappings and attacks by armed groups including Lakurawa – which Nigeria classifies as a terrorist organization due to suspected affiliations with Islamic State – villagers say Jabo is not known for terrorist activity and that local Christians coexist peacefully with the Muslim majority.

Pain and destruction is what they live for. To them, to love is to hurt.

It's so psychologically twisted it's hard for a normal human to even try to imagine.

Since we have them, why not use them? (or similar wording)

Nigeria is very oil rich so he probably wouldn’t want to destroy his future cash cow with a mushroom cloud. Just regular bombs to clear the area for his gold plated oil rigs.

Just south of the Sahel. There isn't a hell of a lot there. All the proven oil reserves are way down south in the Niger Delta and offshore. It might be nice to at least put some reasoning behind what they're doing. But I don't think there's much reasoning there at all. Just stupid shit from an bizarre and grossly inaccurate world view.

All based on the ramblings of a demented old man who was dumber than a post even in his prime. What could possibly go wrong?

And what's the point of all this anyway? Little boys doing exactly what Das Furhrer tells them to and blowing shit up because it's "fun". That's all I can figure. A few pin prick strikes will accomplish nothing, even if it were an ISIS related group of bad guys.

The Sahara and Sahel regions of Africa are nearly as big as the US and Western Europe combined, with good guys, bad guys, but mostly just guys running around. And a hell of a lot of empty space. It's only moderately strategic at best given its remoteness and the sheer difficulty of getting anything of value in and out of it at scale. And it's impossible to assert one's will there for very long. Russia "plays" there only because they're locked out of nearly every other region on earth. After the Syrian debacle, it's really all they got with respect to influence. But then again, I'm thinking. Something magat trash never do.

Mali's to the NW. It's an utterly peaceful area, absolutely at ease.

Unless you ignore the siege of its capital city, Bamako, by ISIS affiliates and friends and the chaos that they've sown trying to establish Caliphate v. n + 1.

They have no trouble making nice with allies, of course.
