Democratic rep calls for limits on 'military authority' of ICE

Source: The Hill

01/11/26 4:22 PM ET

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) said Sunday that Congress should rein in the authority of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the wake of an officer from the agency fatally shooting a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis.

“The real question now is can we find enough Republicans to work with us Democrats, to put a check on the military authority of ICE at this point,” Subramanyam told host Chris Stirewalt on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday.”

In the aftermath of Wednesday’s fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good by ICE officer Jonathan Ross, Democrats on Capitol Hill and nationwide have called for limits on President Trump’s sweeping immigration crackdown.

Subramanyam noted Sunday that the GOP-backed tax and budget law enacted over the summer vastly boosted ICE’s budget. The legislation roughly tripled the agency’s annual budget for enforcement and deportations to $29.9 billion, according to the American Immigration Council. “I’d like to see some more bipartisan action to try to make sure we have some checks on ICE and checks on the way they’re approaching communities today,” he added.

they should be out in force demanding exactly that. Out on the streets, on television, showing up with microphones and bullhorns. Not 20 Democrats, but all of them….every day, every place they can.

WE don't OWN any major "television networks" and THEY are the ones who will pick and choose what to cover and WHO to bring onto their shows.

We continue to whine about "doing something" and we ARE doing this type of thing, but NO ONE is there to cover it except maybe a few local stations and CSPAN, because the rest are RW-owned.

Disconnect the idea of our "messaging" from the REALITY of NOT having a platform TO message with.

People bitch about the few that we own/run like MeidasTouch and their purported "clickbait" headlines, but don't grasp the concept that we are spending our money on HELPING PEOPLE instead of building a BROADCAST INFRASTRUCTURE, while the GOP spends money on HURTING PEOPLE to ENRICH THEMSELVES, using their OWN broadcast infrastructure.

I believe we DO have platforms for messaging….halls of Congress, steps of the Capitol, at protest marches and rallies, City Halls, Town Halls, parking lots, on and on and on.

If groups of Democratic leaders only get on local news, so be it. At least they’re being seen by somebody. A whole bunch of somebodys might lead to new voters. Someone might get persuaded and I’d rather try than not.

The courageous anti-ICE folks with whistles are at least calling attention to an issue of great importance. They certainly are getting some air time. Every void without Democratic leaders speaking out is an opportunity for Republicans who have been very successful in framing most issues. The very fact that Republicans are speaking out everywhere is even more reason for Democratic leaders to show up en masse.

And WHO Is going to cover that? C(riminal) Broadcast System? A(ll) B(ullshit) Company?

You would need to go "old school" and drive to the Capitol to watch it "in person" like the 1700s - early 1900s before radio.

The ONLY ones who more consistently cover what you are describing are some of the "local media" (the metro affiliate TV stations and newspapers) AND CSPAN, which is funded by most of the cable networks, and which covers nearly all Congressional/Presidential "events", including pressers - whether done in the hallways of the Capitol, in the Congressional briefing room, or out on the front steps of the Capitol.

And ironically, when these things ARE covered and posted on DU, the videos get a yawn response, with people posting vanity threads bitching about why DU has videos at all, and threatening to trash the video groups.

And when our Democrats are posting this stuff on social media, here comes a different group bitching about Xitter, BlueSky, and other "social media" content being posted on DU, where videos of their events are often included on those platforms, and/or on Facebook (where they are recorded using "Facebook Live" )... or even Instagram and more recently, the "illegal" TikTok.

The GOP has "success" because THEY OWN the NATIONAL CORPORATE MEDIA. And that includes the large newspapers as well.

The one bright spot is that George Soros' company BOUGHT "Audacy" in 2024, which consists of over 200 national radio stations (many of them large ones), as well as various podcasts, etc. They are slowly making changes to the whole thing and can hopefully start using them for OUR narrative.

WHERE (channel name, streaming program name, radio station name) are you "seeing them everywhere"?

On CNN? On MS NOW? On NBC's "Meet the Press"? The outlets that get posted here on LBN (and I have at least 3 dozen news sources in Firefox tabs)?

ICE has NO military authority. They are not a police agency. They are not law enforcement. We don't need any new laws. We simply need the Governors in blue states (and that's basically where ICE is deployed) to arrest and prosecute ICE employees that are breaking the law.

And they can start by arresting any ICE who wears a uniform that says "POLICE". They are not police. They don't have law enforcement powers, except in the single area of enforcing JUDICIAL warrants related to immigration status.

Here is an example of the Illinois law that should be enforced:

In Illinois, impersonating a police officer is a serious crime, typically a Class 4 Felony, under the Illinois Criminal Code of 1961, Article 32, Section 5/32-1 (720 ILCS 5/32-1), carrying penalties of up to 3 years in prison and $25,000 in fines, especially if done to gain an advantage, cause harm, or deceive, involving actions like wearing a uniform, using fake badges, or pretending to be an officer to stop or search people.

And here's the law from Minnesota:
In Minnesota, falsely impersonating a peace officer is a
misdemeanor, but it can be elevated to a gross misdemeanor or a felony depending on the specific circumstances and prior offenses.
The penalties are outlined in Minnesota Statutes § 609.4751 as follows:

Misdemeanor: Falsely impersonating a peace officer with the intent to mislead another person into believing the impersonator is an officer.
Gross Misdemeanor: Committing the basic offense while doing any of the following:
Gaining access to a public building or government facility not open to the public.
Without legal authority, ordering or directing another person to act or refrain from acting.
Operating a motor vehicle marked with law enforcement insignia (e.g., "police," "sheriff," "trooper," "badge," etc.) that a reasonable person would believe is an official vehicle.

And California:
In California, impersonating a police officer, defined under Penal Code 538d PC, is a misdemeanor offense involving willfully wearing a uniform, badge, or device to deceive others into thinking you're a peace officer, with penalties up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine, though selling badges or selling uniforms for impersonation carries separate, significant fines
