Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday expressed optimism about the House approving a funding package to end the partial government shutdown despite demands from conservatives, saying that he is not asking President Trump to call those Republican holdouts to get the deal over the finish line.
Johnson said he thinks the House will approve the funding package by Tuesday as he left a meeting with Republicans on the House Rules Committee.
The Rules Committee is meeting Monday to tee up procedural legislation to consider the funding bills amid demands from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-La.) that the panel add on to the funding package the SAVE America Act, which would implement voter ID requirements and require proof of citizenship to vote.
We all want the SAVE Act, but we look at the reality of the numbers here. And we passed the SAVE Act twice in the House. Well pass it again, well do that. But this is a funding package right now, and I dont think we need to be playing games with government funding, Johnson said. We still have winter storms, we got FEMA and TSA and troop pay and everything else wrapped into this, so weve got to get the job done.
