Texas man sues California doctor for allegedly sending abortion pills to state

A physician based in California has become the first medical provider sued under a recently enacted Texas statute that empowers private individuals to file civil lawsuits against providers who mail abortion medication into the state.

The case was brought by Jerry Rodriguez, who claims that Remy Coeytaux, a doctor practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area, violated a Texas law that allows abortion providers to face penalties of at least $100,000 if they mail pills into Texas. The filing alleges Coeytaux mailed abortion medication to end Rodriguez’s girlfriend’s pregnancies twice, once in 2024 and again in early 2025.

According to the complaint, Rodriguez was in a relationship with a woman who became pregnant. The filing states that the woman’s estranged husband ordered abortion pills from Coeytaux, which she then used to end the pregnancy. Rodriguez is suing for wrongful death and is seeking $100,000 in damages.

The legal action follows a separate move by Louisiana, another state led by Republicans, which sought Coeytaux’s extradition last month. Louisiana authorities accused him of unlawfully sending abortion pills into the state. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, said he would refuse the extradition.

Pound sand, Texas.

Hat tip to Gavin Newsome and CA. VT has our health provider's backs as well. We're not cooperating. And if you want to come get them yourselves, please be aware that VT is more heavily armed than most European countries. Just saying. Another irony of this ultra blue state.

Leave her and her doctor alone!

Who owns the rights to her body in Texas? Her? Her boyfriend? Or the state?

.... it seems that the strategy is...

First, don't show up for the lawsuit trial, or at least accept that you are going to lose, then,

Second, don't obey the judgement - no $100K check for you.

When they attempt to enter the judgement in your state for enforcement, the your state refuses.

appears that when they tried to it with NY, it was Paxton who sued (on behalf of the state of TX). This time, it looks like they are using someone who they think has "standing" and was somehow aggrieved.

It won't make any difference because like NY, CA has a "shield law" forbidding any recognition of these ridiculous suits coming out of states like TX.

just cannot keep from injecting themselves into other peoples business. Even if it's something they will never experience . i wouldn't think a male could in anyway need or use an abortion pill much less tell a female what she might need .

To regulate interstate commerce. There is no federal in law against it and the origin state it's legal as well. I guess the state can block all incoming mail from outside the state.

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

for that automatically being able to counter sue for frivolous “jackpot justice” as they Right used to complain about.

The guy can explain in court about his affair violating the Ten Commandments, and how he was going to raise that fetus on his own. Was he going to build a nest until it hatched?

So sick of these busybodies.

Sorry Bud that woman decided she didn't want your kid. Maybe take a clue and get lost or try and better yourself.

We really need to brand the GOP with their wanting to support lowlifes, molestors and rapists forcing women and girls into having kids against their will.
