Trump says U.S. bombed Kharg Island, striking core of Iran's oil economy

Source: Washington Post

About 90 percent of the country’s oil exports move through facilities on Kharg Island, located some 15 miles from the mainland in the Persian Gulf.

President Donald Trump on Friday night announced that the United States had bombed Kharg Island, targeting Iran’s most critical oil terminal in an attack that Tehran has warned would mark an escalation of the conflict.

Located about 15 miles from the Iranian mainland in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is the centerpiece of Iran’s oil-based economy. About 90 percent of the country’s oil exports move through facilities there, and an attack could strangle what remains of Tehran’s economy — including the government’s limited ability to pay its military.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the U.S. had “totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel.” The Washington Post could not immediately independently verify Trump’s description of the attack or provide a damage assessment.

“Iran’s Military, and all others involved with this Terrorist Regime, would be wise to lay down their arms, and save what’s left of their country, which isn’t much!” Trump posted while flying from Washington to Palm Beach, Florida, where he is expected to spend the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Bombed some things on the island- maybe. Obliterated it? Doubt it.

He said it was a "warning".

However, India's CNN shows about 6 strikes. Doesn't look like infrastructure was targeted.

US hits Iran’s critical oil export hub as war enters third week

Iran warns of retaliatory strikes on regional oil infrastructure if its own facilities are targeted, reports state media.

Updated 5:17 AM EDT, Sat March 14, 2026

Here's the latest
• Critical island hit: President Donald Trump said the US “totally obliterated every military target” on Kharg Island, which handles roughly 90% of Iran’s crude exports. He threatened to attack the island’s oil infrastructure if Tehran continues blocking ships from using the Strait of Hormuz.

• Iran’s threat: Tehran warned of retaliatory strikes if its own energy facilities were attacked, according to state media. It also reported that no oil infrastructure on Kharg Island was damaged.

• Strait traffic: Iran is considering allowing a limited number of oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, provided that the cargo is traded in Chinese yuan, a senior Iranian official told CNN.

• Regional attacks: 12 medical workers were killed after a strike hit a healthcare center in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia reported intercepting strikes on their territory. And in Iraq, fire and smoke was seen near the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Trump Says U.S. Bombs ‘Obliterated’ Military Targets on Kharg Island

The Pentagon is moving a Marine expeditionary unit to the Gulf. Five U.S. Air Force refueling planes were struck at a U.S. air base in Saudi Arabia.

President Trump said on social media that the U.S. “obliterated every MILITARY target” on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export terminal. The operation was meant to pressure Iran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway that has been largely blocked for oil exports except Iran’s own.

Iran warned of an escalation in the conflict, saying that if its energy assets are hit, the energy infrastructure of those who cooperate with the U.S. “will be immediately destroyed.”

Earlier, Trump said the U.S. Navy would start escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz “very soon.” The Pentagon is moving a Marine expeditionary unit and more warships to the Middle East.
