GAUDY BALLROOM
Design experts are putting Trump’s vanity project on blast.

Annabella Rosciglione Published Mar. 29 2026 12:28PM EDT

Architects are warning that President Donald Trump’s ballroom vanity project has disastrous design flaws.

The National Capital Planning Commission, which Trump has stacked with loyalists, is expected to take a final vote on the ballroom on April 2. But the president has already entirely demolished the East Wing to make way for the new event space.

A place for the graceless child in chief to store and show off his toys.

We haven't seen - or been told - what's supposed to be built underground. Namely his "war room/bunker" where he plans to survive World War III. Let's just keep delaying this mess until he's finally out of there. I'm Ok with that.

I realize there are jobs here, few and probably when done won't get paid if tRump's history is at play here. But, then again he claims it's not our money--but it is.

So, stop building the thing.

Staircases are normally functional - for people to go up. Here, it's not just that the entrance to the building is not beyond the staircase, but that there's a pair of columns right at the top, disrupting the flow of the stairs. The columns aren't needed - that's what steel reinforcing is for - so they look more like the side of a Greek temple, rather than any entrance, and the staircase looks like a mistake that was made during construction.

It has a slight feel of the first Fawlty Towers episode - "The Builders".

It's like he's trying to recreate ancient Rome or Athens. He clearly has an "Emperor mentality", nothing associated with the U.S.

It's way of compensating for having smaller hands than everyone else because he'll enter from the larger private entrance door inside.

Shocker. This ballroom is a metaphor for Trump's entire existence. Gaudy, ugly, elitist, overblown, destructive, pointless, without grace or harmony or authenticity.

It feels like he's building a gargantuan and tasteless mausoleum 🙏
