Schumer on Trump mail-in voting order: 'This too will fail'

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday slammed President Trump’s recent executive order cracking down on mail-in voting, calling the move “just the latest in a series of frantic efforts by Donald Trump to rig elections for Republicans.”

“Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies have done everything they can to deprive millions of Americans of their right to vote through pushing the [SAVE America Act] and illegal executive orders,” Schumer said in a statement.

“But Senate Democrats have been united, held firm, and will continue to fight their baseless, extralegal attack on Americans’ right to vote,” he continued. “Make no mistake about it, just like his previous voter suppression attempts, this too will fail.”

The order, signed Tuesday, directs Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to collaborate with the Social Security Administration to create a list featuring verified U.S. citizens who have voting eligibility. The U.S. Postal Service, under the order, is barred from sending ballots to anyone not on the state’s approved mail-in ballot list. Ballots are also required to be secured in envelopes that have barcodes for tracking.
