RINGGOLD, Ga. (AP) Republican Clay Fuller on Tuesday won Marjorie Taylor Greenes former U.S. House seat in Georgia, turning back a Democratic challenge with the help of President Donald Trumps endorsement despite uneasiness over the war in Iran.
Democrat Shawn Harris had led the first round of voting in March in a 17-candidate field, but couldnt overcome the northwest Georgia districts strongly Republican tilt.
However, Trumps escalating rhetoric had some Republicans worried, even in this deep red district. The president had set a deadline for Tuesday at 8 p.m. one hour after polls closed in Georgia for Iran to reach a deal with the United States, saying that a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. However, he later announced that he was pulling back on another attack for two weeks to allow negotiations to continue.
Acworth resident Jason McGinty said he was worried Trump was about to go too far, but that he voted for Fuller to make sure the America First party is still in place.. Retiree Judy McDonald agreed with the presidents decision to go to war but was very anxiety-ridden over the conflict.

Fullers arrival in the House bolsters a slim Republican majority. But he will have to run again later this year to secure a full two-year term. Greene, once among Trumps most ardent supporters, resigned in January after falling out with the president.
Trumps endorsement boosted Fuller over Republican competitors but couldnt win him a majority on March 10. However, the 12 total Republican candidates won nearly 60% of the vote. The 14th District is rated as the most Republican-leaning district in Georgia by the Cook Political Report.
Fuller, who served as district attorney prosecuting crimes in four counties, was tapped by Trump in February to succeed Greene in the district, which stretches across 10 counties from suburban Atlanta to Tennessee.

We may or may not continue to raise funds for him. It might depend on the final margin.

(4,328 posts)... the everlasting fuck is the matter with people in the 14th District?!!? Is it something in the water? Is it what happens when cousins marry? WHAT?!!?
They had a chance to escape the Dark Side, but chose to go to their knees instead. I hope that can live with their stupidity.

(5,084 posts)but with 91% of the vote in, Fuller only won by 15 percent--- which is 15% down from previous results,
which is roughly in line with how Democrats are performing in most special elections
over these past two years----
No, we didn't win it, but that result is NOT 'good news' for Republicans running in November!

(5,084 posts)That's only about half of MGT's last margin over Harris....

(10,079 posts)Looks like the final margin will be about 14%. As a comparison, MTG won it by 29% in 2024, and 32% in 2022. Trump won the district by a whopping 37% in 2024.
As with almost all special elections during Trump's presidency, it is a significant Democratic over performance. Unfortunately, this District is just too Republican to be winable for Democrats, even under extreme circumstances like exist now.

(23,312 posts)If MTGs district shifts 20+ point towards Dems, then Ossoff should have an easier time getting re-elected.
This is an excellent example of why the theory of strategically placing ICE agents in certain blue districts will not work, especially for senate races.
