Conservatives Melt Down Over Potential Major Change To California's Elections

Source: Huff Post

Jul 6, 2026, 10:29 PM EDT

Numerous conservatives on social media lashed out at California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Monday after he announced new legislation to safeguard the upcoming midterm elections.

In remarks posted to social media, Newsom issued a stark warning for anyone considering helping President Donald Trump interfere in the state’s elections.

“If you violate California’s laws, if you interfere with our voters, tamper with our ballots or meddle in our election, you will be prosecuted,” Newsom said. “It doesn’t matter who gave the order.”

Newsom said the legislation would make it a felony to seize ballots before the election had been certified by state and local officials. “We will be the wall he (Trump) cannot get past,” Newsom said. “Because we believe once an election is decided, the winner governs for everyone.”

To anyone considering helping President Trump interfere with our election or our count:

You will be prosecuted.

That’s why I’m moving forward with new legislation that would make it a FELONY to seize ballots before the vote has been certified by state and county officials.

Any legislation will be challenged in court by the California Republicans in a court district friendly to Trump. So they may not ultimately stop it but can delay its implementation in time for the midterm elections. As has been noted elsewhere, their strategy is to delay and tie up the opposition in lengthy legal red tape. I hope Newsome has an answer for this.
