Today's Tiedrich rant: America the beautiful, America the deeply fucked up

248 years ago, a bunch of privileged rich white males who didn’t want to pay taxes founded America on a great set of ideals — freedom, equality and justice — and then went about implementing those ideals in the most fucked up way possible.
248 years later, we’re still fighting what often seems like a losing battle to guarantee everyone a share of freedom, equality and justice.
it’s exhausting, yet the struggle goes on. never lose hope. today, let’s rest. tomorrow, the fight continues.
here’s to you on this July 4th, America, you great big beautiful fucked up country.

Before the Revolution, most essential products were brought in on British ships, so they controlled the commerce and shipping. Early Americans hated the fact that they had to pay taxes to the Crown as well as tax on tea and other staples. I think Tiedrich is simplifying the issue somewhat. Most early settlers understood that taxes were inevitable, but there were also workarounds. Drink coffee and the King doesn't get a cut.
