Mass shootings a choice the Republican Party makes

In theory, school shootings are tragic.

Indeed, after Wednesday’s mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia — four murdered, nine injured — Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey expressed gratitude that “a much larger tragedy” had been prevented. It was a win, of sorts.

I don’t mean to criticize Hosey. But the notion that mass shootings constitute a genuine tragedy is inconsistent with the sturdy refusal to reduce their number or severity. “I don’t like that this is a fact of life,” said GOP vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance.

A wealthy, technologically advanced society that declares “nothing can be done” when quite a lot can be done is making a statement about its hierarchy of values. In many locales, including Georgia, guns, and the men who cherish them, are higher on the list than children and those who cherish them.

Astounding statistic if true. I thought more guns and weaker rules are supposed to keep us safer somehow.

...then they would ban any weapons not a musket or whatever they used way back then. But we know their originalism is very selective and arbitrary.

It's incredibly shameful, but I guess the monies the gun lobby supplies to Congress outweighs any concerns about the safety of their own children.

Monumentally, stupendously shameful.

In an average year, 1,927 people die and 5,029 are wounded by guns in Georgia. The Peachtree State has the 8th-highest rate of firearms violence in the US (17.9 deaths per 100,000 people).

In an average year, 960 people die and 2,841 are wounded by guns in New York. The Empire State has the 46th-highest rate of gun violence in the US (4.8 deaths per 100,000 people).
