Chuck Todd: What if we can't unite?

Analysis: Trump's reaction to the most recent apparent attempt on his life is very different from his initial reaction to the July shooting. It's one of a series of bad signs for the nation.

Although the piece has plenty of classic Chuck Todd both-sides-erism, he does have a few phrases of decent analysis. Short and worth a read and comment. One passage that's pretty clear:

...the Trump campaign appears to be approaching this apparent assassination attempt as an opportunity rather than as a moment to reflect...Fox News has been especially aggressive in its programming the last few days, going out of its way to find cherry-picked examples of rhetoric from the left that, on its face, can sound like incitement. It's something Fox could have easily done with Trump’s rhetoric but chose not to. It is simply feeding an audience what it thinks it wants, rather than deciding whether it should be responsible and provide nuance and context.

Todd also goes on the blame social media, primarily, for the division. He's otherwise pretty light on the political right's culpability in all of this.

The GOP won’t unite with the rest of us if their lives depended on it, sheerly out of hate. They have refused to have even a reasonable level of civility and rationality since Obama was elected. So the same garbage will continue, and we will have to deal with it, at least until DonOLD is in prison or dead.

Time for the MSM and anyone else believing that possible to forget it already. If large reptiles from outer space invaded the solar system tomorrow Republicans would begin immediate negotiations with them to have us be the reptiles' slaves.

The best we can hope for is to maintain possession of the white house and a majority in both bouses and impose our will on them.

Forget this naïve unity treacle already.
