Donald Trump won, again. Can American democracy still be saved? I believe it can... but we've got to get to work. Fast.
Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time; but there is the broad feeling in our country that the people should rule, continuously rule, and that public opinion, expressed by all constitutional means, should shape, guide, and control the actions of Ministers who are their servants and not their masters.
Winston Churchill, November 1947
Not long after the Axis Powers surrender brought about the end of World War II, British statesman Winston Churchill, a once and future Tory Prime Minister, delivered a speech to the House of Commons in which he spoke the above words.
Churchill did not come up with the saying democracy is the worst form of government except for the other forms that have been tried, but his speech certainly popularized it, and that popularity has carried forward to the present day.
Churchills remarks delivered during an era when his party was out of power came to mind as I contemplated tonights very divergent state and federal election results.
