Russia Is Winning the Cold War Without Firing A Shot
In 1956, Nikita Khrushchev delivered what was meant to be a chilling warning to the West. Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you, he told assembled representatives from NATO countries at the Soviet embassy in Poland.
Western representatives were both outraged and bemused. The Soviet economy was sclerotic, its ideology brittle, its grip on Eastern Europe maintained by tanks and fear. Meanwhile, the United States and its allies had NATO, democracy, cultural power, and a global alliance system built on consent, rather than coercion.
But Khrushchev wasnt threatening invasion. He was predicting erosion. That erosion did not arrive because of ideology but because of its absence.
And today, with NATO wobbling, the United States openly embracing spheres of influence, and Russia poised to reclaim dominance over Europe without firing a shot, its hard to escape the conclusion that he was right.
