What we know so far about the fatal ICE shooting of a Minneapolis woman

(NPR) Federal and local officials dispute the circumstances that led an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer to fatally shoot a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

President Trump and other members of his administration characterized the ICE agent's actions as an act of self-defense. State and local leaders, however, cast doubt on that account and called for a full and fair investigation.

The shooting occurred on a residential street in south Minneapolis — less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020. ICE agents were conducting targeted immigration enforcement operations at the time, according to Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin.

Marimar Martinez, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen, was shot five times by a federal agent in Chicago. They said she too hit their car. Let's also remember her attorney, Christopher Parente, stated that body camera footage shows it was actually an agent turning his vehicle toward her car and saying, "Do something, bitch," or "Go ahead, bitch," just before the shooting began. They would have gotten away with it if not for the bodycam footage. She was fortunate enough to survive, and for that reason the outrage faded. We can't let this one go.
