AI Is Finding More Bugs Than Open-Source Teams Can Fight Off
Anthropics Mythos and similar AI tools can identify threats and vulnerabilities faster than small teams can fix them, putting the internet at risk.In 2025, Daniel Stenberg, the chief maintainer of cURL, an open-source software tool that transfers data using URLs, received 181 notifications of bugs or vulnerabilities across the codebase he oversees with a small team of six other volunteers.
That was roughly as many as the previous two years combined. Last year was quite intense during periods, Stenberg said from his office in Sweden.
With hindsight, that 2025 bump which Stenberg attributed to the rise of AI tools like OpenAIs ChatGPT and Anthropic PBCs Claude, and the ease with which bug report forms could be filled out with their support was just a taster.
By April 9 this year, the cURL team had already fielded 87 requests. That puts them on track to receive some 325 reports during 2026, roughly as many as they received in total from 2020 through 2023.

(25,550 posts)1. I am starting to get the idea that the AI Revolution is not going to be good for the human race.
It is not going to make our lives easier.
It is not going to create economic opportunities for 99% of the people.
It is going to increase economic disparities.
The filthy rich oligarchs will flush us all down the toilet because they think we can be replaced by AI. (My Great Replacement Theory)
Soon we, as people, will find our destinies being controlled by AI systems, including in medicine, in criminal justice, in our jobs, in our personal relationships.

(26,318 posts)2. It is to be expected. First time any software is attempted, and depending upon the significance of the software, the
calls that that software calls, the inputs/outputs put out by the AI code, plus any rather new features probably associated w/ any new AI source code not totally ID'ed yet. There's a whole slew of considerations to look at.
