Related: About this forumGOP Rep. urges McCarthy to 'cut out' Freedom Caucus and work with Dems to avert shutdown - Velshi
Republican Congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska joins Ali Velshi to discuss the looming government shutdown, infighting between House Republicans and the Freedom Caucus, and why hes recommended to Kevin McCarthy that Republicans reach across the aisle as a solution.
Ive recommended to the Speaker and our Conference that we work across the aisle and get a bipartisan deal on spending, he tells Velshi. Were going through a lot of gymnastics right now to get 218 and youve got 5 who refuse to do it. Lets just realize that, cut them out, work with the Democrats and make the best deal we can as Republicans and govern. These 5-10 people dont want to govern. They want to shut down. 95% of us dont want that. Lets make these 5-10 people irrelevant and work across the aisle. - Aired on 09/23/2023.

(22,850 posts)1. Kevin the Kowardly Kustard wouldn't dare
Among other reasons, because he knows he and his family would promptly receive a barrage of misspelled death threats from the wingnut base.
Plus, of course, there goes his speakership if he does.
They created their own monster.

(222,239 posts)2. Well said, that's it exactly
He's stuck between a rock and a hard place - between TFG and his deluded supporters in and out of Congress - and the rest of Congress and the American people.

Would it that it weren't so - but then, they're getting worse.

Much less, to Democrats.
He'll take the help - and then give us the elbow.
