(395 posts)Having said that I'm going to propose something that will probably get pushback from some DU readers. I think we need to repeal the 14th amendment, the one that grants citizenship to anyone born on our shores. The reason is that it is out of date. It was written to keep the Southern racist Civil War losers from denying citizenship to former slaves. Those days are gone. We also need to restrict immigration because it is no longer the 19th century with acres of vacant land, thanks of course to genocidal policies that wiped out so many Native Americans.
Here's a couple of reasons why I believe this changer is needed. Homelessness is mainly due to the high cost of housing and low wages. Population growth, mainly through massive immigration, contributes to this on both the demand side and the supply side. More people equals lower wages. More people equals demand for more housing.
Second: By allowing in so many immigrants we are brain draining the developing world and taking the most educated and motivated people out of their societies, leaving those nations stagnant and failing.
The 14th amendment makes as much sense today as the 2nd amendment. Both are relics of a bygone period that do not apply to today's world.
