Diana Buttu, former legal adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization, speaks to Ali Velshi about the factors that led to Hamas attack in Israel. While many of us were surprised, we actually shouldnt really be surprised by whats happening, Buttu says. This is the natural consequence, unfortunately, of 56 years of military occupation and the denial of freedom. - Aired on 10/07/2023.

(1,294 posts)Trust me, I have been very critical of the government of Israel. I think we give them too much leeway sometimes. However, this attack is not going to give them freedom. This is the wrong way to do it. But this conflict I don't think will end even if this attack didn't happen.

(9,078 posts)The Israeli government has been ruthless to the Palestinians for ages, and I don't understand why the US is supporting Israel. I don't believe in Hamas attacking Israel this way, but there comes a time when people don't have anything else to lose.

(1,294 posts)They have tried to do everything else, but nothing has worked. While I don't agree that this is the way to do it, at this point for them, it's either fight/kill or be killed. They have nothing to lose.

(2,165 posts)I thought she made a lot of good points. I must also admit that these most recent Hamas attacks are breaking news, and so new that I have not yet been filled in on all the details. But one thing is for sure - it has been very difficult for the Palestinian people living under the Israeli military occupation of their homeland, which I have witnessed first hand. But I would not dismiss this as totally propaganda out of hand; on the other hand, a good case could be made that the Western mainstream media is heavily biased towards the Israelis. Just a second opinion here...

(1,294 posts)There is a bias alright. I have always said that Israel is not blameless in this conflict. I think we give them way too much leeway. Let's not kid ourselves. Netanyahu and his government is corrupt, and he is a big reason for the conflict. To say he is not is being naive. But Hamas also has support from Qatar and Iran. I think the Palestinians are in a very difficult position. It is sometimes true that when you are in such a difficult position, you want to take arms and fight back. But again, this was not the way to do it. I am sort of conflicted about this. I don't think that supporting Hamas will help Palestine, but Israel is not helping the situation. For a while, a two-state solution was brought up, but I don't think it really ever gained ground.

(9,078 posts)making the judiciary subject to his will. The right wing Israeli government has been a burr under my saddle for a long time. Back when Junior was president, Cheney and Rumsfeld were totally supportive of Netanyahu, and he is nothing but a right wing corrupt narcissist.

(1,294 posts)I think this was during when Obama was in office, but remember when there was I think a UN or UNSC resolution condemning Israel and Netanyahu for what they were doing in Palestine and the US abstained instead of vetoed? The media went after him. There is so much bias for Israel that is becoming ridiculous.

(1,581 posts)Who are the people that have lived there for centuries and have the right to the land and who only came into being in 1946? My father said this was the best answer with "what to do with the Jews" after the end of WWII. "We will just dump them in the desert, We certainly can't have them coming to live anywhere near us." The British have a lot to answer for....
