(8,344 posts)what do you like about Texas these days. I loved it until about 1990's but in the last 30 years I think it has turned into a shithole. Climate sucks, air/water is nasty, shitkicker/beer joint culture is dumb, laws targeting LGBTQ people, terrible healthcare except in the major cities, total right-wing politics, voting rights suck, I could go on and on.
You might wonder why we (wife [native Texan] and I) don't leave? It is because my DW has a 92yo mom who is dependent on us. So I am heavily involved in county politics doing my best to change what I can. Honestly, I hear people blame California transplants for turning Texas but I don't see it. I think Texas is a reflection of Texans.
Was in Texas in San Antonio, Austin And Houston and my California born and raised hubby couldnt wait to fly home.
I work for a moving company and both the people we packed up to move to Texas during the pandemic moved back a year later. One was a Jewish family whose kids never experienced antisemitism and were afraid to go to school. And the other were seniors with a young grandson who lost his mother unexpectedly and they couldnt get any mental health care or assistance for their 7 year old grandson.

(9,100 posts)Well, it's completely different for me. I was born and raised in TX but moved in CA in '88 and have lived here most of my adult life. I LOVE it here!
I was in Dallas for three months this past summer. The temperatures were three digits at least 75% of the days (this is a guestimate based on my experience). I was there working for a friend who has a small business (in her home) and we only went out to go to the grocery store and to run errands. It was too hot to do anything outdoors. We stayed inside in her air-conditioned home.
I have a couple of friends who I grew up with who are progressives who still live there (more of my childhood friends are right-wing trumpsters). The friends who are progressive there HATE it. They've never lived anywhere else (other than TX) and which to God they could move (because of the politics and the weather). A couple of them are looking at Colorado as a place to retire..
