NOTE: The film's credits explicitly state that no horses died or were injured during the filming.
From Wikipedia: The Lighthorsemen is a 1987 Australian feature film about the men of a World War I light horse unit involved in Sinai and Palestine Campaign's 1917 Battle of Beersheeba. The film is based on a true story and most of the characters in the film were based on real people. (Elyne Mitchell wrote the novelization based on the screenplay.)
It follows in the wake of other Australian New Wave war films such as Breaker Morant (1980), Gallipoli (1981), and the 5-part TV series Anzacs (1985). Recurring themes of these films include the Australian identity, such as mateship and larrikinism, the loss of innocence in war, and also the continued coming of age of the Australian nation and its soldiers (the ANZAC spirit).

(1,940 posts)than props. In this one, the cat was a real character, with personality, while still behaving like acompletely believable cat. I think Bob actually played himself in parts of the movie.
They did a pretty good job with th emovie, but only quibble is that anyone who knows cats - really knows them -will recognize scenes (and certain meows and mannerisms of the cat) that don't quite match up with the story - for example - theres one scene (in the bookstore) where Bob's body language (flicking tail etc.) is clearly stating that he wasn't happy being there but it was supposed to be a happy scene.
Still, a movie about a cat that has a half-way believable cat in it is to be applauded.
