I believe they boasted that their large pie w/everything had over 4 pounds of toppings --
which included virtually EVERYTHING that you could think of in that era that might go
on any usual pizza to include popcorn shrimp and pineapple and, 3 minutes or so before
it was done, they would pull your pie from the oven and cover it with thinly-sliced fresh
tomatoes. Inexpensive, too.

Pitchers of beer.

Spanky & Our Gang movies projected on several walls and, on the weekends, a live
ragtime piano player would come in for FUN sing-alongs.

The ex-MsMFM and I and another young married couple would go out for this just about
every other weekend -- GREAT inexpensive fun night out.

Tucson used to have a coupla Shakey's here and when I heard that, I got pretty
nostalgically excited, only to have my hopes dashed with the news that they had left
town shortly before I arrived here.

My middle daughter likes pineapple and portobella chunks. We don't do meat, so pineapple and bacon (Hawaiin) is out. But as for OTHER "non-pizza toppings", have you ever tried spinach and artichoke hearts? That's particularly good on a white pizza, and yes, regular alfredo sauce works as a base if you toss in some freshly ground parmisan. How about english muffin pizzas made with BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese? Then there are the quick and easy (build your own) tortilla pizzas. And a roasted garlic and broccoli pizza is pure heaven, especially with Tabasco.

Speaking of Tabasco...

As you know, pineapple and bacon are not pizza toppings, no matter how many people eat them. There are enough emergency room x-rays floating around for you to know very well that people sometimes use things in the wrong way; just because someone else did it doesn't make it ok. HOWEVER, who ever gave you the idea that spinach and artichoke hearts aren't pizza toppings? I think they're both classic. I've also heard the term "white pizza" to mean just an olive oil or oil-based sauce base. I don't know if alfredo sauce counts or not; I'll have to talk to the other board members about that.

These other things you mention are simply no more related to pizza than is sweet and sour chicken or a roasted goat. I don't know what you're doing there. (except for roasted garlic and broccoli, which is fine)

I forget what it was called, but a brick oven pizza joint (Bertucci's I think, might have been Uno's) had one on the menu. Anyway, I planned a special evening out with my wife. I rented a limo and we took it two hours into Boston (and the ride back was seriously fun). Anyway, I'd pre-arranged the seating and meal at this pizza place and had them make one in a heart shape with the ricotta all in the center, also in a heart, and black olive slices around the perimeter. She melted. It went really well with the bottle of merlot I ordered. One of the best damn pizzas I've ever had, and I've made similar here at home, but we don't have a brick oven.

As for Boston, I didn't know the clubs so I asked the driver for a suggestion. We ended up in a place with what might have been a Hungarian gypsy band. They had beer, so we were cool. They also had a huge dance floor that NOBODY was using. Note: I was in a 3-piece suit and she had on a pink and white low-cut strapless sundress that flared out at the bottom and the white size 3 pumps she wore for our wedding. We danced all night and in the appropriate gypsy style. It occurred to us later that a lot of the compliments we got were probably because they thought we were PAID dancers. We still laugh about that. But hey, we were drunk, full of pizza, and love to dance whenever and wherever.

25 years ago, I got some purple Thai peppers and made chili. Even I couldn't eat it, but I did anyway.

A couple of days ago my wife picked some of our own peppers. I grabbed a paper lantern habanero and ate the whole thing. On the plus side, it did clear out my sinuses and cure my indigestion, but it also turned my face bright red and required about six glasses of water to ease the pain. DAMN that fucker was hot!

They're quick, easy, and satisfying. And yes, Tabasco DOES stick to pizza. It's my favorite topping.

On a side note, I was at a bar where some guy was having his 21st birthday party. They were putting one or two drops of Tabasco in tequila and acting like it was hot. I intervened and said if they bought me a shot, they could put as much Tabasco in it as they wanted. Then I left for the bathroom. I looked back and saw the evil grin as they loaded it up.

When I got back, there was about an 8th of an inch of Tabasco in the bottom. I tossed it back and said, "thank you." They all looked stunned. I grew up eating stuff covered in hot sauce.

Pizza is merely a holder for mushrooms - It's pointless to eat it with any thing else, or eat it plain

I often ordered the pizza for a large group of hungry people who had been working and drinking beer all Saturday, and ordered more mushroom than anything else. Other people would say "no! everyone likes plain! or pepperoni!" but I never listened, and I'd order 4 mushroom, 2 veggie, 2 plain, and 2 pepperoni, and there would always be some plain left over.
