Namibia is planning to kill more than 700 wild animals, including elephants, zebras and hippos, and distribute the meat to the people struggling with food insecurity as the country grapples with its worst drought in 100 years.
The animals set to be culled include 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 60 buffalo, 50 impala, 100 blue wildebeest and 300 zebras, the countrys Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism announced Monday.
They will come from national parks and communal areas with sustainable game numbers and will be killed by professional hunters, the ministry said in a press release.
The aim of the program is to help alleviate the impacts of drought in the southwest African country, the ministry said.
Namibia declared a state of emergency in May as the impacts of drought worsened. An estimated 1.4 million people around half the population are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity.
The culling program will take pressure off water resources by reducing wildlife in areas where their numbers exceed available grazing and water, the ministry said.
It also aims to reduce the potential for conflicts between elephants and humans, which can increase during drought when animals search for food and water can bring them into contact with people.

(37,578 posts)I can hardly stand to read stories like this.
I think I'm going to be sick. I know its not the peoples' fault--they're starving. Its heartbreaking all the way around.
Are they getting any relief from other nations, or just not enough?

(495 posts)If the government has a controlled hunt done by trained professionals there will be more grazing for the remaining animals and the animals being culled will provide some food relief for starving people. In a perfect world, there would be help from other countries to sustain both people and animals. We do not live in an ideal world. The government is taking a sensible approach and doing the best it can. People are more important than animals. I hope the country receives some rain to help the population and animals.

(92 posts)After (checking records) a few hundred years of western countries raping countries with less power of their resources and destroying their economies and governments to fit "our" preferences; leaving these countries in different types of ruin, we absolutely owe it to them to make reparations to them.
The vile smugness of Reagan to say "they are our dictators" is just beyond the pale. The immigration "crisis" is the natural consequences of our harm, our damage, coming home to roost.
When will we ever learn?
