But my wife and I call her that regularly, often with great affection (except when she passes noxious gas -- and, in case you're wondering, she's on high-quality food so that's not the source of her periodic "fragrance" ).
Anyway, she's not insulted by being called Stinky. She probably thinks it's her name as much as Cali is.
What's your pet's name and do you use it exclusively, or do you call them by a nickname more frequently?

(24,041 posts)His name is Finley and his usual nicknames are Fins and Bendy Fendy (when he wants attention, he bends in half and raises his front paw and lowers his head). He's ok with whatever we call him, he knows he's very well loved.

(22,013 posts)His real name is Simon.
He is a rescue and had some issues, like inappropriate peeing. I think positive terms were better to help him adjust.

(314 posts)There is the official name with corresponding nicknames and derivatives, plus the generic name or names.
Our cat Sasha was also sishy-Sashy, squish-squash, and also just Princess. Our dog Carson is mostly Buddy, but also B-dog, good boy, and occasionally stink-boy 😏

(10,639 posts)Call him anything with Roc that is most common but Rock and Roll is used, so is Rock of Ages (we both getting older), Rock my World is his name when getting in the car for rides to walks, Rock round the Block when we go out to garden. He understands them all.

(5,581 posts)Pal officially because he lived on the Palapa in our house in Mexico. However, he's generally called "Shithead" because of what he did to my husband's head many years ago. He's 28 years old and isn't slowing down a bit.

(24,147 posts)The Sweetheart name came from my efforts to socialize her with human affection. She was born indoors into a dysfunctional household of multiple related cats, a dog, and several children where the attitude was everyone for themselves. By the time that I got her at age 9 weeks, she had been attacked once by her older half brother. She was the runt of a 3 kitten litter and had to fight for a spot to nurse. I saw her human try to "toughen her up" by flipping her on her back and rolling her around while the tiny little kitten struggled to get free.
So Ember was hyper defensive when I got her home. After she stopped hissing every time I touched her, she trusted me enough to climb up the bedspread and sleep near me. I talked softly to her while petting her head, saying stuff like, "You're such a sweetheart. Just a scared little kitty who is really just a sweetheart inside."
So she associated the word "sweetheart" with affection and has heard it so often that she responds to it like she does to her name.

(24,903 posts)He was a spoiled rotten cat.
I also nicknamed him Kittenus (he was 20 pounds when he passed), Mr. Kittenus, Catus, Kittenus Rottenus, etc.

(69,554 posts)We call him Big Boy a lot. I also call him Doof, or the full Doofus. He just a big, lumbering lapdog so he reminds me of a doofus, even though he's smart & listens well.
He answers to both just as readily as his real name.
