(5,464 posts)Looks like paradise. We did that for several years when newly retired in a Mexican beach house. You're building wonderful memories and are so much healthier than when living in the rate race. Salud!

(5,464 posts)Relative plus tourists had found our little rural town and its character changed. But it was wonderful while we were there!

(24,993 posts)Did you consider any other countries. Are you still US citizens?
LakeArenal
(29,537 posts)We wanted a retirement adventure that was all our own. No employers, no family no friends were allowed input or opinions. (Of which there were many anyway)
Never came here before we moved. Auctioned off all our stuff. Found a US phone number that sold real estate here. Asked if we could rent some place. He hooked us up with our first rental.
Read books and YouTubes. Reality is no books or videos are all that accurate.
Sept 1 2019 we flew here and havent looked back.
We are legal residents of Costa Rica. Not citizens. And we are citizens of US and we are voting Harris Walz.

(24,993 posts)...in Costa Rica? Do you still rent?
I hope I'm not being nosy. This is all very intriguing, and I think you are braver than I am.
LakeArenal
(29,537 posts)Have to pay cash. But it hasnt stopped anyone. Real estate is booming.
We rent because of financial upsets during the Bush housing crisis.
However, renting as a senior has many benefits. We will never need to buy a new refrigerator or pay emergency plumbing problems.
Having said that: the house being built in the picture is being built for us to live in rent free. Its like winning a lottery.
A wealthy widow who lives in the house above travels five months a year. She is building this house as an investment but wants someone always around when she travels.
Some way she picked us!!!!! Crazy right?
You have to be a permanent legal resident to get a job here. But you can work on line or start your own business but you have to staff it with Ticos.
We dont mind questions. We know Costa Rica isnt for everyone. But what we wish for everyone is, take a risk. Make the golden years just that.
We didnt want to devolve into the old people who only discuss their ailments and compare prescriptions with other old people.
Have an adventure.

(24,993 posts)It's called "giving an organ recital." Something I avoid assiduously unless it's a damn good story.

(7,789 posts)Did you guys know Spanish already before moving to Costa Rica or did you learn thete and/or live in an expat community ?
LakeArenal
(29,537 posts)But lots of expats. We all know everyone. Our area is not touristy.
There are few roads so if it has a view Expats live on the side with view and Ticos live on the other side. But there are some developments here but most not gated.
Was fortunate to find free Spanish class. Cant say we are fluent but we certainly get by. Ticos are very nice that way.
Was fortunate to find a very reliable Tico friend. A good Tico friend is almost essential and everyone has one. Especially handling beaurcracy

(1,111 posts)I wondered if your name was related to where you live. We visited Costa Rica last March. The Arenal area is my favorite from what Ive seen.
