According to Virginia State Police, the bed of the tractor-trailer hit the overhead sign near mile marker 200 near the I-295 interchange at 9:36 a.m.
The cab continued forward, but the driver did not stop until coming to a weigh station on I-64.
The bed, which was empty when the crash happened, was taken down from the sign around 11 a.m., but the interstate remained closed.

Guy at weigh station: "ok, ummm, what are we weighing today?"

(185,260 posts)This in out in the sparsely populated area between Richmond and Williamsburg. Bottoms Bridge is one of the few signs of life between the two. I always dreaded any car I mightve been in breaking down out there. Miles and miles between exits.

As I posted above - this is nowhere 64. Bottoms Bridge and 295 are about the first sign of life coming from Williamsburg which is a good 30 miles away.
