Earlier this summer, a man was having a beach day at the Jersey Shore when he came across what looked like a bin full of trash with a bunched-up towel next to it. Upon further inspection, though, he realized that there were actually two hermit crabs hiding in the bin and one rolled up in the towel.
The man quickly pieced together that a family had purchased the hermit crabs in a shop on the boardwalk and then abandoned them. Heartbroken by the state the crabs were in, he asked his friend @doctorbugz (DoctorBugz) for help.
DoctorBugz was equally upset by what had happened to the crabs.
I cant even
wrap my head around [it], DoctorBugz told The Dodo.
But DoctorBugz decided to focus his attention on getting the hermit crabs to feel better rather than dwelling on what theyd been through. The first course of action was making sure the crabs had a comfortable living environment. He researched hermit crab care and filled their brand-new enclosure with the proper substrate, accessories and nourishment.
These creatures deserve so much better, DoctorBugz said in a TikTok.
When the man at the beach first found the hermit crabs, they were living in painted shells. Many people may not realize that painted shells can be deadly for hermit crabs, as the paint chemicals are toxic to them. So DoctorBugz added a variety of natural shells in the crabs new enclosure for them to choose from.
