The man needs something Science Fictiony: to press a button if he tips over w a inflatable, indestructible protector (stronger than Kevlar!) like a 'quilted ballon" but transparent to totally surround him; a parachute, and some kind of ham radio, or something so he can actually radio for when he's reached the bottom of where ever down there!
