We are parents of a rescue cat, her name is Cece. Our names are Glenn and Elizabeth. We adopted Cece in 2016 - the picture is of the day we got her. She was approximately 3 years old at the time, so she is now about 11 or 12. Within the past week she suddenly began eating less food and eating litter. We brought her in, and they said she was anemic and had a low platelet count. The vet recommended we take her to an emergency hospital for a transfusion. The hospital is now doing additional bloodwork and a chest x-ray which will cost about $1,100. Before even knowing what the problem is, they have estimated the cost of a hospital stay and additional diagnostics and treatment at $4,500 to $10,000! We are not ready to say goodbye to her yet, and we feel she is young enough to make it worth the effort - but we just cannot afford it. We love her very much and she has the sweetest disposition. Without yet knowing more (we'll update asap) the hospital gives her a 33% chance of recovery. If you can help us, we would be eternally grateful. Thank you!

Edit: Thanks so much for the recs, everything helps!

(23,541 posts)I would not leave Cece there. Ask your vet for another referral. Also, be very careful about choosing a, "specialist." Both suggestions come from several painful experiences.
I am happy to donate, and hope for a good outcome. She looks like a very sweet girl. Please keep us posted.

We are also a bit leery of that. We just dont know what we should do.
Maybe we'll know more after ultrasound - will update as often as we get info.

(2,122 posts)They think she most likely has bone marrow cancer or something similar. We decided against hospitalization, a biopsy etc. and are just giving her some steroid medication to make her more comfortable. We had to take away the pellet litter because her stomach has a bunch of pellets in it that probably wont pass through. She is a bit subdued compared to her normal feisty self but otherwise ok so far.

(25,147 posts)My heart goes out to you. I had to make the decision to let my girl go last October after 17 years. Took me a while to get over her not being here every time I came into the house. But I still have her in my heart.
I hope Cece can stick around a little bit more with you, and when her time comes, she goes peacefully.
All the best to you all.
