(11,890 posts)All that is left is the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the most misnamed media outlet in the country.
Nevertheless, it is the only state-wide paper. There is no other source doing local investigative reporting. There is no other source of local news. It's not half a loaf. It's barely the heel of a loaf but it's better than no local news at all.

(11,890 posts)A budget is a moral plan. We pay for what we value. I support businesses that share my views on democracy. (Nobody really needs that much Pinzeys spices.) I donate to politicians who will protect the Constitution and individual rights.
I value a free press and local news and will spend my money consistent with my values.

(119,931 posts)"We pay for what we value" includes those of us who support non-politicians who share our values, and support liberal/humanitarian causes.

*And, just for the record, some of us DO need that many Penzey's spices, regardless of what the orange creature said about them.

(11,890 posts)We're big fans.
All I was saying that we buy a lot from Penzeys because of their support for Democrats.
My post said: "I support businesses that share my views on democracy. (Nobody really needs that much Pinzeys spices.)" I don't see any way to construe that as a slap. No one needs the amount of Pinzeys spices, towels, etc. we have because we support Pinzeys.

(119,931 posts)can understand how it might be taken that way.
And, given your support, I do undertand what you mean. I had to talk to myself very sternly this past Sunday about the latest promotion, even as I was telling myself it was NOT too early to start on the holiday gifts.

So, I actually go up and wrote a note and put it on the cupboard--use some nutmeg for breakfast coffee.

I like subscribing, but think encouraging folks to read them through their library is fine, too.
Folks should read the news!

(34,189 posts)That does not cover local news themselves other than FSU football. Even before Knight-Ridder bought them out, they got their state government news from news services rather than send their own reporters down the street to cover it. Once Gannett bought the paper, it didn't improve.
While I was in college, I delivered papers for them. Then my husband worked for them for a while. Since then, we have not gotten the paper once - their employment practices are shit and the paper isn't worth lining a rat's cage with.

(34,077 posts)Good at all libraries in my county. Love to look at local historical documents for this area. Plus all the magazines that would cost a fortune to subscribe to. All free.

(34,077 posts)On my side of our street, we have the tribal award winning fire department, they even have large water tanker trucks. Just across the street is the township volunteer department that takes forever. Protected by the tribal police and I guess they are Federal Officers. I support and respect them. Not all of the locals do. They have a great cultural museum near by too. I ever donated an artifact I found that they excepted and thanked me.

(17,672 posts)... but wouldn't you know it, the library doesn't have online editions of them. 5000 choices, and no Economist or Atlantic.
I bet you thought I was talking about those other magazines.

(69,889 posts)The website doesn't have news links, even for card holders, or what they call patrons.
There's a lot of news access for the computers for use at the library, but we have to go there.

(186,651 posts)Our local paper, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, thinks its the monolith it used to be. I found an article I really wanted to be the other day - paywall - so I ran it through the archive. Nope. They demand payment. No free 2-3 articles a month like actual newspapers.
I used to have a subscription. Their from Wire reports were upside down. Opinion first. The lead paragraph was second to last.
