Google knife sharpening in your area.
Ace hardware does it for $6.99 a blade. So, if they're good chef's knives, it's worth it.

I have a favorite knife I use. It's not fancy, but I love it. The ronco rocker. I use it for everything and the blade stays pretty sharp. The last one I bought new on ebay for $19.00. It's still sharp after 2 years.

6. Plenty out there that say they don't need sharpening. I have some ceramic knifes that do a reasonable job

but not necessarily for all purposes. They have remained sharp but I'm not a gourmet cook so they don't get the same "work-out" in my home as elsewhere.

7. It's not hard to sharpen a knife -- you could use whatever your husband used and look on youtube for instructions.

I'm very leery of claims of a knife that doesn't need sharpening.
There is no cutlery grade steel that has enough surface hardness to stay permanently keen.
Also, remember that "sharp enough" is different for different users, but a kitchen knife that isn't cutting easily is actually riskier than a properly sharpened knife. The more pressure we need to apply, the greater the risk of slip or deflection.
I use a whetstone, but in a pinch I have a Bavarian Edge sharpener. It's easy to use and it does work. Not as good as a full sharpening, but pretty darned good.
And, it's probably cheaper than those "never needs sharpening" knives.

They can, however, be rented if you have the money to pay somebody to employ them.
