I'm hoping that the employee saw it as I was heading out the door. She knows me after many years and is friendly. If she saw it, she turned it in to be kept. I'll go there tomorrow.

....to know I don't have that kind of dough for a hundred dollar tip.

Cash back? Based on past purchases, or...? How do you know if you're entitled to it? How do you claim it?

I've shopped at Kroger for years but haven't heard anything about this before.

The amount of purchase, for example, is $10.
When you put in your card to pay, you have the option of getting cash back (comes off your card balance)
The machine spits back to you in dollars the difference.

I buy something for $10
I tell the machine I want $100 cash back
It spits out $100 cash, and charges my card $110.

it was only $40 but man, the sinking feeling when you're halfway across the parking lot and remember!!

I went back but there was no sign of my money and no helpful employees.

Sorry this happened! All you can do is hope the person who helped themselves to it, actually needed it.

It's a pain in the neck to go back to the store, too.

Maybe I can call and see if anyone turned it in.

I went to use a self-checkout and immediately the machine spit out a fifty. After a few larcenous seconds passed, I brought it to the store self-checkout watcher and told her the machine was broken. She explained that people sometimes use it to get cash back and it's surprising how often they forget it. Within moments, the person returned and got their money. My advice is if you're going to do this, do it every time you use self-checkout so you get used to the routine.

I did something similar, and I was supposed to get money back from the cashier but I just left without it. I realized what had happened so I went back to the cashier and she told me to come back tomorrow with my receipt and go to customer service. They looked up my transaction, which showed that I was supposed to get $40, and when I walked away the cashier put the money back in her till. When they counted that night it was $40 over, so they gave it to me.

I was amazed that they kept such a close watch - but its a huge cash handling business, and all stores have a few bad employees.

But no way of ID.
Oh. The person after may have used a card that would be identifiable.
But there's no proof that the first person left money.

I called the store. No one turned it in. They keep a log at the desk, and also at the self check out.
An extremely painful lesson for someone on a modest fixed income.

It's frustrating for sure. I think losing cash has happened to most of us at some point.
