(107,848 posts)But, damn if they didn't make me wait until I was 10 or so (with the exception of the kenneled bird dogs--"Yogi & Trouble" when I was too little to go out there and play with them).
But while I waited for that elusive doggy, my best friend next door had a cat and I would sit out there with that kitty for hours playing as a 5 yo.
I guess my Mom was allergic to cats as I'm sure I asked for one too, but that was a definite "no."
So, I can't deny every dog I see is like a magnet. But, I enjoy kitties as well. I guess it is like your "favorite child"-- You don't say it and it doesn't diminish your love for the other, but...

(14 posts)50yo childless cat lady of 4, never had dog, but love all animals, especially other peoples big dogs, bigger the better - sister has 3 - and just moved to big country house on lake and increasingly interested in maybe getting a puppy or 2 (prefer puppy as cats never exposed to dogs before and figure theyd adjust better to bringing dog in small rather than grown, and I like dog to grow big as Im not into yippy lap kinds).

(2,378 posts)I like dogs just fine too, though. (One exception: I can't stand small, yippy dogs. Obnoxious creatures.) We had family dogs when I was a kid, but I've had only cats since I've been "out of the nest". I love cats. They are fascinating, beautiful, amazing, adorable creatures. I remember hearing some years back that cats are actually the most popular pets in U.S. households, but it depends on which way you look at it. Cat households are more likely to have two or three, while dog households are more likely to have only one, so while there are more households that have a dog, there are more cats kept as pets in U.S. households. There are Nova documentaries on PBS about both species. Here's a link to the one about cats, but it's easy to find the one on dogs if you want to watch it too, both documentaries are equally interesting.

(4,446 posts)Is of me at a week old under the Christmas tree with the cat. Only have one now But have had 6 at one time. Have had dogs most of my adult life, usually 2 at a time. But when my last dog Muzzy died I decided he was such a perfect dog I could never replace him. Besides those 10 pm bathroom breaks are not something I want to do anymore. My boy Figaro is the perfect boy. Doesn't scratch the furniture, isn't real needy, doesn't pee anywhere but his box, doesn't mind his manicures or bath. But he does eat a lot and wants it when he wants it, no waiting.

(3,767 posts)We get copper heads around here. Ive got a snake hook and a snake tong. I know a nice unpopulated spot for them near a creek and a few hundred acres to roam. Told all my neighbors if they spot one just call. I have tropical fish also. Forgot to mention them. Held tarantulas and kind of wanted to get a black Indonesian scorpion.
Edit: I put out wildflower seeds so the hummingbirds can fed naturally.

(289 posts)From when i was a kid through my teen years our family had only cats. I love cats but as an adult I don't have the time or want to take care of it.
I don't care much for dogs but there were two I did like. In my teens, our neighbor had a collie/shepherd I liked. Real gentle dog.
My next door neighbor in our condo complex had to put her labrador retriever down because of old age. I really liked that dog. Whenever you came to their door the dog would bring her large stuffed tiger to show you it was hers.

(96,149 posts)As long as my cats could be indoor-outdoor I could deal with the sniffles & sneezes, but where we are now they would have to live 100% indoors, so no.
Our little dog died in January she was elderly, but even so we were very sad as she was such a sweetheart. We are waiting before looking for another we were offered a puppy last week, a very active 5 month old poodle mix who yanked hard on her leash and accidentally made her owner fall and break her hip. I was seriously tempted to go meet her, but less than 24 hours reflection made me realize that last time I trained a puppy that rambunctious was 15 years ago i.e. the one that died in January, and dammit somehow I got old too. 💔
So I am putting out the vibe to the Universe that within the next year hubby & I want a calm young-adult doggy who likes cuddles and treats and walkies. 💕
Because dogs are very nice people.
PS I realize this makes me sound lonely for having a dog again. Yes, I am.
