(120,816 posts)The original, not the remake, which sucked and probably made Bernstein spin in his grave.
debm55
(35,917 posts)and it stunk. I don't think it was ever on TV again. I believe it was live. The match to the original.
Ocelot II
(120,816 posts)The reason I thought it sucked was because some of the music was rewritten from Bernstein's brilliant original score. I hated it. Why the hell would anybody think they could do better than Bernstein? It's like some hack like Barry Manilow thinking he could improve on Mozart.
debm55

(28,755 posts)Nonetheless, I thought Spielberg's remake was a first-rate effort---better acting, better dancing, better ending.
Ocelot II
(120,816 posts)dancing, ending, etc. without shitting all over Bernstein's score. It was almost like if the Met decided to put on a new production of Don Giovanni but decided Mozart wasn't flashy or modern enough, so they hired some pop music hack like Andrew Lloyd Webber to "improve" it - but even if they had the very best singers and the most beautiful sets and costumes, it would be blasphemous and it would suck as bad as West Side Story II, and I'd want to send them all to Hell right along with Don Giovanni.

Intermission - This is GREAT!
At the end - Best thing I ever saw on a stage!!!!
On my way out Im buying CDs, t-shirts, whatev!!!
The opening scenes of the poor in prison - reminded me of Reagan (who was President) and conservatives.
When it came to US I saw its open in DC. Then in NY.
I think I saw it 13 times.
Should be mandatory for European history or literature classes.

Mostly because it reminds me of my dad and my childhood when we had the original cast LP. But the overall story of trying to cope with a changing world feels timeless.

Back then, when the pterodactyls were still a nuisance, every musical had some good roles for us non-singers. Brecht was my favorite for that reason.

She walked out of the house singing. I said out loud, Oh God, this is a musical. Mr wife and daughter turned and laughed and then watched my reactions the whole time I decided to turn it positive so I just focused on Emma Watson.

I'm not a fan of musicals, but in Cabaret all the numbers were in context.
People were dancing & singing in places where people were supposed to be dancing & singing.
I found that far more pleasurable & I loved Joel Grey's character.

(1,790 posts)It was said to be Walt Disney's favorite as well. I love this story told by the Sherman Brothers (who wrote it):
On Fridays, after work, [Walt Disney would] often invite us into his office and we'd talk about things that were going on at the Studio. After a while, he'd wander to the north window, look out into the distance and just say, "Play it." And Dick would wander over to the piano and play "Feed the Birds" for him. One time just as Dick was almost finished, under his breath, I heard Walt say, "Yep. That's what it's all about."

I saw them do Tommy at the Filmore East in 1969! Then The Met Opera House '70.
I do have a few favorite songs from others' mentions from Westside Story, Camelot, Man of La Mancha.
